Thomson 28WH403S keeps going into standby

My tv keeps turning itself off (to standby) then 1 of 3 things happen:

1) the red light flashes then the set sometimes comes back on or;
2) the red light flashes 4 times then five & repeats this pattern and will not come back on without being turned off & on completely.
3) the set will not come back on and sometimes after a few hours I can switch it on and it will be OK for a bit, then it starts again.

This is happening more regularly every day

    I have similar problem on 28WH403S. For a while it kept turning off then on again, now just won't turn on at all. Red light comes on a flashes then repeats. Can hear static build up on screen each time as per normal start up but never gets there. Burning smell from back of TV. Phoned repair guy yesterday reckons a transistor's burnt out...wait to see.

Tv wont turn on

well first of all if anything happens when you push the button then the button works! I think you should leave this one to a professional technician. There is a circuit problem that will require advanced knowledge.

The flashibg red light

John, I do not know of a code, but it is a good idea in the design to have several goes at starting a circuit, before completely shutting it down. Oscillators are supposed to self start due to noise generated. Some electronic circuits require a reset pulse to be generated before the start up is allowed. The reset circuit may not be generated if the set is turned on again too soon, so it will stay in standby. This may normally be a few minutes to 30 minutes so it seems something in your set is faulty and could get worse. Try a test run with the back off and clean it out of dust with a long brush to keep it cooler. Make sure little fingers cannot get near it. Look to see if anything is obviously overheating.
