My Canon ZR300 plays video fine except for one problem. The audio goes completely glitchy when I play the tape. The video looks clear and plays normally, but the audio sounds like an out of range walkie-talkie as it randomly jumps in and out. Even more annoying, the problem carries over to my computer when I capture footage. The tape I'm playing works fine in another DV camera that I have (that camera's Firewire port is damaged, otherwise I would use that one), so I know it's not the tape. I tried a head cleaning tape but that didn't show any improvement.
Old or worn Audio Tape Head needs replacing,
Head Cleaning tapes are not the best for these, they can only be used so many times and they do rub tape carbon into the tape head, best thing to do is get an ear bud cleaner -"Cotton Buds" - and dip it into metho and give the tape head a light rub with it and ear bud, should do it...if still has issue then the tape audio head is had it, but rarely do they breakdown.

You will find the manual here. The radio is part of the 280 series radios, so there is a general manual on all in that series.
SOURCE: Vista and firewire 1394?
Firewire works fine under Vista, but it's quite possible your USB to Firewire bridge doesn't have proper Vista drivers. You wouldn't expect Vista to include these, they would be installed from a disc that came with your adaptor. USB to Firewire is a questionable option at best... there are often problems with it. You may be better off with a PC-Card or ExpressCard solution, if the laptop is your only computer.
Also, when the camera says "DV IN", it's expecting video from the PC to be sent to it, it's not in capture mode. Most camcorders must be in either "play" mode, or a special "link to PC" mode in order to even be recognized by Windows (any version) as a video input device.
However, until you resolve the issue of supporting your Firewire device in Vista, nothing the camcorder does will be an issue yet. You should check the documentation that came with your USB to Firewire device, the driver disc, etc. for information on Vista support.

Hello people who face similar problems...
First confirm whether it is a problem with the head assembly/ dirty heads.
Do the symptoms appear only on the camcorder's internal TFT side display or is it visible on an external monitor (connect using the AV cable supplied) and the EVF(electronic view finder) also.
If it is visible on the EVF, TFT Side display and the external monitor then it is definately a case of Bad video heads or the tape guide requires to be aligned or calibrated
