I replaced an earlier Epson R220 because the message: Service Required...Parts inside your printer are near the end of their service life. See your printer documentation.
The printer works fine, however, I realize it is only a matter of time/use before the printer will not allow me to make prints. Is there anyway to reset the unit so that it will work after it shuts down? I realize I can take it to a repair facility, however, the last quote to have it serviced cost more than I paid for the printer new. Can you help?
I have the same problem with the R220. It was printing fine then one day I got a message that stated parts of your printer are near the end of their service life. Check documentation. Then it stop printing. Both paper and ink light flash although there is no paper jam and cartidges are full with Epson cartridges. Now it doesn't print,I have the same problem with the R220. The waste ink pad needs to be replaced and then the counter reset. Go to: www.inkjetprinterhelp.us and follow the online prompts for your model printer.

This is a very common problem and is basically your printer reaching a point where an internal counter has tripped. The primary reason for this is the printer has guesstimated that the waste pads are now full and need changing.
Resolving it is pretty simple...
You can either take it to a service centre (assuming they'll be able to service one as old as the R220) and get them to handle it for you.
OR..
Do some searching on the subject of fitting an external waste ink tank. You'll also need to reset the waste ink counter which can be handled using the A10_IPR utility that Epson released for North American customers some time back.
For more information on your specific printer along with instructions on how to fit an external waste ink tank this link should help.
the parts most likely to be replaced with such a message are the waste ink pads. (sponge pads that collect the ink that is used for print head cleanings). these pads are difficult to reach inside the printer (full dissassembly is necessary) and doing so is a VERY dirty job. i suggest contacting a repair center near you.
its a tweak with epson.... they have a counter there that intentionally stops it from working even through your printer is still in good condition.
there is an available driver that could correct that depending on the operating system you are using. i think if i maybe correct it only works with and o/s that is winxp.
the drivers name is inkpad reset utilty.
try to check the website www.epson.com/ipr for the inkpad reset utility
If you mean the "parts in the printer have reached the end of their service life" or "Service required" then you need to do two things.
1. Reset the waste ink or "protection counter" in your printer. This requires the SSC utility (for the R220) printer.
2. You need to redirect your waste ink flow to an external tank of some description or replace the waste ink pads in the printer. The external tank is a lot easier to do... Help on this is available here
If the message/error you're getting is: "Service required" ...or... "Parts in the printer have reached the end of their service life" (you get the idea!).
... then your problem is that the waste ink pads in the base of the printer need replacing and a little searching on google using keywords "R220 epson waste ink service" should get you everything you need to: - reset the waste ink counter - install an external waste tank
After that it's really a case of carrying on as before... Appreciate this is late in the day but hope it helps.
yes actually there is. the parts its talking about is the inkpad, you can send this over to an epson certifies servicer in your are to have inkpad change and they will reset the counters for it. go this link and look for a servicer near your place http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/SupportIndex.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes
This is probably due to the waste ink pads needing replacement. If you still have this problem and would like help solving it, please post a new comment to this effect.
