Tim, optical cables in current technology are for audio only so they have no bearing in a discussion of video.

How is your video connected? Specific details about affected source(s) and their precise connections will help lead to a specific answer.

If you're using component video (Red/Green/Blue) cables you may have them crossed or one is not connected tight. As you state, direct connection is good. I avoid many problems by never running any signal to or through a device that doesn't use or improve it. IOW, video goes straight from a source to the monitor. High-end audio goes directly from its root source to the AVR. No problemos.

    Hiya David

Cheers forth reply. We're connected via hdmi. I am worried that the hdmi board has gone. It's just out of warranty too! Arg! Tried different cables... Expensive bit of kit looks like it's gonna get more expensive!

Like I said, you're not absolutely required to have any video run through the receiver on its way to a TV. It's not like the receiver does anything TO the video besides screw it up in your case. Bypass it. That's why all modern A/V sources have separate audio and video outputs. Each should go directly to the device that is designed to extract the best presentation. Unnecessary interconnections only add potential points of failure.

Do you know David, I had never thought of it that way but it does make total sense. I think in my haste last year I just wanted it up and running but there is a separate optical I can use for theps3 so I shall do that! Nice one mate, and thank you for the solution. Not worrying about the repair so much now.

Hook your Xbox to tv via HDMI, then hook TV to reciever through digital optical or composite cables. If you try to get your picture through receiver first, you may get picture and sound but, sound may be delayed and picture might not be the best. Bettter to run through tv first then provide sound to receiver.

Hi. I write from spain. I have the blu-ray LG

Have you tried the another optical cable? They don't tolerate dirty connections or small-radius bends in their routing. THAT (and the expense of optical cables) is why I always choose coaxial connections when possible.

NO AUDIO/set up problems

For this Sony, you have to use separate audio cable(s). Either optical in BD or Digital Audio in DVD (single coaxial cable will do the trick) I bet the display says UNLOCK. I had the same problem, very dumb.

Good day!

Optical output, no sound!

Have you selected Optical output from the audio setup screen of the TV? That needs to be selected to transfer TV audio to the optical out of the TV.

ok your tv does not come with the very best sound, you have to get a receiver 7.1 or you can use the optical wire , that's if the system you are using has that option.

Cannot play VHS

Combo DVD/VCR players don't output the VHS with Component Video. Most of the time, it won't output over the S-Video either. The high end outputs are ONLY for DVD output. You must run a yellow wire, or use coax cable to get the video. Same goes for the optical digital sound out. It's only for DVD use.
