You may want to clean the carb.

SOURCE: Little spark

check the gap on your plug. .030 is what it should be. also make sure that your
kill cable is working properly and not grounding the engine out.
the gap for you magneto should be set to .010 to .012
loosen up the magneto insert a standard business card or 3x5 card
then turn the flywheel so that the magnet on the flywheel pulls the magneto into it. then tight the magneto mounting screws down. try spark now. always use fresh gas. -no-water- if in doubt throw it out.
gas is BAD after only 30 days.

SOURCE: How do I clean the

the fuel line if it is dirty you should just replace it you can get it at homedepot or ace hardware . your spark plugg gap should be the thickness of a match book . and the air filter should be replaced every year if you use it in a dusty environment maby every couple of months .

Carburetor Cleaning TUNE UP of Toro 6 5HP Lawnmower with Tecumseh Engine

The above link will provide a video on how to clean the carb on the 6.5 hp mower. Before you go to that length, try putting some carb cleaner in the fuel tank and see if that corrects the problem. Also, as the video shows, make sure the spark plug is getting a good spark. If the spark is weak , the fly wheel may be rusted, ot the magneto is bad.

Have a self-starting, self propelled toro lawn mower about 5 years old, I ran it out of gas by accident & now it won't start

It seems to be an obstruction in your fuel delivery system. Get a can of ether and a spray a short burst of it into the breather area near the carburetor, if the mower starts up and then stalls out, then you may need to get your carburetor serviced.

I have a Toro self-propelling front wheel drive mower. As I was mowing the self-propeller stopped working. I checked the oil, gas, blade but it all looks OK. The filter needs to be replaced but I'm not...

5 Rules for troubleshooting engine problems:
1. Spark
2. Compression
3. Accessories
4. Carbonation
5. Timing

Those are listed in order of how hard they are to do.First check the plug and wire. Now is a good time to change the air filter also.

Step two will require a compression gauge,if you do not have one before you go buy one.Try to start the mower. If when you pull the rope goes back in and pulls tight your compression is ok,if not buy a gauge.

Step three.Check that the cable(kill switch) attached to the handle is in good repair.

Next is the carb. You may need to clean it.Carb cleaner would be my first choice, the spray can type. Now if that still wont fix it.You need to tear down the carb and clean a small screen on the inside. That step is far from fun,but is not very hard to do.

Lastly is to check the timing. This can be done by dissembling the crank case and realigning the gears. The gears are marked so it is not as hard s it sounds.

Should none of that work, look at the belt make sure it is not broken and jammed up in the pulleys.
