The left speaker of my Acer sound terrible (too much bass) compare to the right one. However when I plug in the ear piece, the sound completely normal and perfect. What should I do?

If the speakers are healthy, the amplifier driving the speakers may have failed. The output to earphones may be coming from a lower power level point prior to the power amp for the speakers. Most audio is handled by an integrated circuit that has both preamp and power amp in one package and the preamp may be OK while the power amp can fail alone.

Yes it seems confirmed that the amplifier within is in order and what would have gone wrong is the speakers within the unit. If you can open the laptop carefully sometimes it can be due to a mounting issue , otherwise a fault on the speakers coil or diaphragm, try and tap off dust ,press the diaphragm few times to make it move freely, if not you must find the same type replacement or will need to change them as a pair so as to sound equal.

How can I measure the sound quality from my receiver/amplifier and speakers? It sounds distorted to me and the components aren't cheap (Onkyo receiver and Polk tower speakers)

And if you measure distortion, then what? Do you have a scope and a spectrum analyzer and a calibrated sound source?

The Mk.1 Ear can decide if it likes what it hears. Some people LIKE excess bass, for example.

Determine if it's source-related, cable-related, channel-related, speaker-related by swapping or focusing on one at a time and comparing. Try naming the products and look at the manuals for correct setup.

I cannot get sound from Insignia Speaker ND-POS20?

Speaker Placement Before shopping for speakers, try to imagine where you're going to put them in your room. Speakers can be placed on floor stands, hung on wall brackets, or placed on furniture. Subwoofers typically sound best in room corners or near the left- or right-front speakers.
The front three--left, center, and right--speakers usually sound best when positioned with their tweeters elevated to the same height as a seated listener's ears. In any case, try to keep the center speaker near the same height as the left and right speakers.
You can place speakers on shelves or on/in a low cabinet or entertainment center. Some speakers are better suited to this arrangement than others. "Acoustic suspension" sealed satellites are the most appropriate. Next best are ported speakers--as long as the ports are located on the front of the cabinet. However, speakers with rear-mounted ports won't perform at their peak when placed inside a piece of furniture.
As for the rear-channel surround speakers, they usually sound best when positioned three or more feet higher than the front speakers. However, high-fidelity DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD music will sound best when surround speakers are placed at the same height (ear level) as the front speakers.

The sound on one of my speakers is breaking up and crackling terribly, especially on songs with more bass. What can I try?

try to exchange your left and right speaker to confirm. where the cracking noise come? it could be from speaker or your amp itself. 1.if after exchange speaker, it still happen on same speaker then is your speaker already damage could be the cone edge or the coil.
2.If happen on same side from your amp, then that channel output is damage from amplifier.

My left speaker is loose

The symptom you are describing is exactly what is known as a "BLOWN" speaker or the voice coil has "shorted", this is caused from the volume being up to loud, heating up the voice coil and frying it, in the future if the bass/sound is distorted then turn the volume down just enough to stop the distortion and this will save the speaker.
As far as getting a replacement speaker, you will have to contact the manufacture to get a replacement.
Good Luck !

One speaker is MUCH louder than the other

It sound like you have a break in the main wire from the computer sound card to your speaker amp OR the plug is not plug in completely plugged in all the way. Try some other speakers or ear buds / head phones to isolate sound card problem or speaker problem.
