Proton radio does anyone fix these? i have one about 20 years old and it has a lot of static.

  • Anonymous Oct 03, 2008

My radio is a Proton 320. Lots of static until the radio warms up. When you turn the radio off, the static returns. Quite loud. I have 4 of these and it's the first one to have problems in over 25 years! Can't complain, I guess, but I hate to throw it away. Can it be fixed?

I simply cleaned my red switch by spraying it with tuner cleaner and the problem went away (it will return in a few years and cleaning it will correct it again). The switch can only be cleaned with the radio open. A can of tuner clean/lub with a small straw will be needed.

The electrolytic caps will fail due to electrolyte evaporating so replacing them will extend the life of the radio. the other parts like diodes, ic's, resisotors and transistors will be stressed out from voltage spikes and fail because the capacitors no longer can smooth out the ripple voltage common in audio amps since the audio level is always changing

I REPLACED ALL THE ELECTROLYTIC CAPACITORS IN MINE AND THE STATIC WENT AWAY UPON START UP, TURNING IT OFF AND EVEN PLUGGING IN THE ELECTRICAL OUTLET THE 1ST TIME. ELECTROLYTIC CAPACITORS HAVE ELECTROLYTE FLIUD INSIDE THEM THAT ACTS AS A CONDUCTOR OF ELECTRIC CURRENT. THE FLUID DRIED UP AFTER ABOUT 15 YEARS AND THE CAPACITOR NO LONGER FUNCTIONS. EXPECT TO REPLACE THESE EVERY 15-20 YEARS. I LOOK FOR 105*C CAPACITORS BECUASE THEY LAST LONGER DUE TO BEING SEALED BETTER AGAINST HEAT.

ELECTROLYTIC CAPACITORS FILTER OUT THE SIGNALS AND POWER IN MANY ELECTRONIC DEVICES TO PREVENT HUMM, STATIC, BUZZ AND WHINE FROM BEING HEARD. THEY ALSO ACT AS SMALL BATTERIES IN ANY CIRCUIT.

ALSO I HAVE NEED A PICTURE EMAILED TO ME OF THE INSIDE OF THE RADIO WHERE THE DIAL CORD FOR THE TUNER GOES. I BROKE MY DIAL CORD TRYING TO CHANGE THE E-CAPS WHEN THE HOT SOLDERING IRON GOT TOO CLOSE. I HAVE NEW DIAL CORD AND I NEED TO SEE HOW IT IS ROUTED AND HOW MANY TURNS ON EACH SPOOL INSIDE THE RADIO SUCH AS THE DOUBLE SPOOL,. THE TUNING CAPACITOR FLYWHEEL AND THE TUNING KNOB ON THE SIDE OF THE RADIO. MY EMAIL ADDRESS IS [email protected]

Where and how many electrolytic capacitors are there?

I would like to try this solution, too.

Can you e-mail me a digital photo of their locations?

Program stored frequency memory problem

very possible this one has an internal battery that need to be replaced. I am not talking about your radio battery itself, inside there is a coin size battery like a 2025, 2020, 2032, etc. you can get them at radio shack, walmart, lots of places. take the back off and look inside to see. mine did and replaced it and now it works fine. your model may be different, but it is worth a try. if that is not the answer then the memeory chip is bad or the the capacitor on it has failed

I have a cobra 29 with echo, tweeked and tune. I can transmit strong and I hear those who speak to me but I dont have any static like you do with a new radio. Is this something I need to worry about as Im...

Make sure the squelch is turned all the way to the left, the RF GAIN is turned all the way to the right. The cobra 29 has a very good noise blanker, Turn the ANL/NB switch to off, You will probably hear a Lot of static, As long as you have a good ground on the radio and antenna, and your SWR is 1.5 or lower, you need not worry about static.

Mag One Radio - Static

If your BPR40 radios are all about the same age, it could be a sign of your batteries getting old and needing replaced. A bad or weak battery will cause the radio to exhibit static, and then eventually poor or no transmit. Check your battery date code first, it is a 3 digit number on the battery label, followed by a space and then usually a number 1. On the 3-digit code, the first number is the year, the next two the week of the year. 229 would be 2012 the 29th week. Replacement batteries should be available for around $35.

If you feel the battery is not the issue, you may have ONE radio which is causing the problem. Try using all your radios and testing by shutting off just one radio at a time. You may identify the culprit. Motorola offers a one year warranty on the BPR40, after the warranty is done, flat rate repair is typically available for $69.

Third possible cause is some type of interference in your area. If this is the case, your radios may need a PL code programmed into them, if you don't already have one. This will filter out unwanted noise or transmissions. Sidenote: If you've added any new computers or electronic office equipment recently, it may also interfere. Some foreign produced computers will lack the filters required in the USA to prevent interference with communications. Coiling excess cables can be helpful in stopping RF noise.

The second of static at the end of your transmission is called "white tail" and is common in all modern radios. There is a programming feature to eliminate most of the white tail noise, it is called reverse burst. Your radio dealer can reprogram your radios and add this to your radios, or future radios you buy. The trade-off with reverse burst is that you will loose the last of your spoken words if you do not hold your PTT an extra moment, as reverse burst actually transmits back or cuts off the end of a transmission to eliminate the noise. White tail is worse when mixing old model and new model radios together.

Best regards.

I have a 25 y. Proton 300 radio, which until recently has been flawless. It now reverberates and seems to have "ghost" sounds, even when sharply tuned. What's wrong????can it be fixed???where could I...

It sounds like the tuner is out of alignment. A number of things can cause this kind of problem. However, a realignment is a very costly proposition, especially when considering the used value of the Proton 320. If you really like this radio, you might want to try buying a used example off of eBay. They come up very frequently. Only... be selective. Don't pick anything from a seller without a lot of good feedback. And don't overpay ($50 tops).

T5000 have a lot of static!

I think if you can´t undestand what the other person is sayin, and you think is working fine, the problem could be at the speaker, check if the speaker is clear of dirty or sand or any thing that has not to be there. If you find any dirty or sand on you speaker, try to clean with a brush and giving some little knocks with a piece of steel Good luck
