Dishwasher stops working a few minutes after being started

Make sure the water is turned on to the unit first--next, is there water entering the tub? Check the float switch--the round, plastic, "flying saucer" shaped object at the bottom of the tub. Gently lift up on it and carefully listen for a very soft "click" sound. That is the tiny switch underneath working. If something gets trapped under the float switch, the washer won't fill with water. Next, if water is indeed in the tub, did you hear the motor pump running? If it runs and then stops, there might be a problem with the control board--check to see if the drain pump works properly--cancel the cycle and listen for the drain pump turning on and draining out all the water. On almost all dishwashers, at the start of a cycle, the drain pump will turn on briefly to pump out any standing water left in the motor base(you can't see the water but it's there) so it doesn't get sprayed onto your dishes. Then, fresh, hot water enters the tub, when the water level reaches the proper level, the float switch rises, tells the computer enough water is present, then starts the main pump. If the water is not being drained out, try to listen for the drain motor humming. If it is running but not draining, it is probably jammed with food or other debris and must be cleared. If the water is turned on but no water is entering the tub, check the inlet water valve underneath the washer--the water line is connected directly to it. It is electrical and operates on 120v. You will need to carefully disconnect the connector from the valve, activate a cycle, and using a voltage meter, check to see if 120 volts is present. If it is there and no water is entering, most likely the valve is bad. If there is no voltage at the valve, either a wire is broken or the main board is defective.

could be a water inlet valve. Turn off water supply....disconnect hose at dishwasher....turn water supply on slightly to ensure water supply and hose are ok. If you have water there , problem could be water inlett valve or perhaps a sticky float valve.

Switch dishwasher on and starts up ok but when it comes to pumping water in it stops and does not do anything else.

Hello

Investigate these five areas if your dishwasher won't fill with water:

As water is filling your dishwasher, a float rises along with it. When the float reaches a predetermined level, it shuts off the flow of water, thereby preventing a leak. Sometimes the float can get stuck in the wrong position in your dishwasher, and it can prevent your dishwasher from filling. Check your float assembly. Replace it if you need to.

The water that fills your dishwasher lifts the float, and when it reaches a certain level, it acts as a trigger for the float switch. The float triggers the float switch to shut off, thereby shutting off the flow of water into the dishwasher. A defective switch may interfere with your dishwasher's filling ability.

Your dishwasher may not be filling with water simply because the water valve's filter screens are dirty and debris-filled. Gain access to your water inlet valve and try cleaning it out. This might be enough to solve the problem. You can learn how to access your water inlet valve in the replace a dishwasher water inlet valve section.

Alternatively, your water inlet valve could be defective altogether. That could be the reason your dishwasher is not filling. Test it for continuity. If it is not functioning as it should, replace it.

Your dishwasher's drain valve is regulated by a drain solenoid. If the solenoid is malfunctioning, it may not allow the drain valve to funtion properly, which in turn could be the reason your dishwasher is not filling with water. Investigate your drain valve and test the solenoid. If the solenoid is faulty, replace it.

Model: Frigidaire GPDB998JC0 It fills and drains

Check your water level to see if the water valve is even filling up properly. After starting the cycle, listen when the water fillup begins and ends. Open door and see if there is enough water at the bottom. Should fill up to the float valve. If there is not enough water, the valve needs to be replaced. Costs about $25 and can be replaced diy if you are handy with pushing back the hose clamp and undoing and redoing the water line connection.
Make sure you unplug the electric, and shut off the water before you even want to look behind the toe plate. Dishwashers have high electric hazard behind the toe plate..

Kenmore dishwasher is not draining properly.

Float valve is jammed.

Look inside the machine on the floor will be a small float valve. Looks like a small upside down cup. Lift it and clear anything from underneath.

The valve is a safety feature to stop the machine from over filling. If anything gets under the valve it will jam open and stop the machine.

Not working?

Check for a clog internal or external.

Scoop as much water our as you can. Open the cover on the floor of the machine. Usually just turns and lifts out or snaps out some are screwed in. Take your time and try not to force anything. Look for a clog there.

Check for clog in the drain. The dishwasher will connect to the drain under your sink and run either directly to the drain or into your disposal unit. Remove open the connections and look for a clog. Clear if necessary.

Not the clog?

Water is pumped out by the machine via an internal pump located under the base. If it fails the water will collect until it trips the float valve. First scoop out all the water from the machine and run it again. If water comes in and it runs to the point it fills again and trips the float then either the pump or timer is faulty.

Pump check.

Remove the machine. It will be held in place by screws directly into the counter top. You may have to lower it to get it out. The front feet turn with a wrench to lower.

Turn off the water supply. Run the unit again until you get to the drain cycle.

Connect a test light or voltage tester to the terminals at the pump. Check for voltage at the pump. If you have voltage replace the pump. If no voltage the timer is faulty.

Timer problem?
Some can be replaced as a unit others are integral to the control panel. Turn style can be replaced. Touch control can not.

My Hotpoint dishwashers water stopped turning on. It has worked fine in the past but all of the sudden no water, just hot/dirty dishes.

check that your float valve is not stuck in the upper position. This will stop water from entering machine. If it is not stuck( a utensil may be stuck under the float valve) then the float valve relay switch may be the problem The float valve is in the bottom back usually under the lower rack of dishwasher

Bosch SMS6032GB/20 worked fine the first time but does not pump water inside hence the dishwasher stops. There is 1/4 water already inside on the left hand side.

TRy filling it with the sprayer from the kitchen sink . If it washes properly this way, look at the fill valve and the float assembly. Bosch uses a seperate pump for wash and drain. See if it can drain after the test.

Will not shut off at end of the drain cycle

there should be a float behind the fill valve with a magnet in it which operates a reed switch. This switch keeps the pump running as long as the base has water in it or if the float is stuck on the up side (and makes the pump "think" that there's water in the base). Check this float to see if it's stuck and release it so it could tell the pump when to stop draining. Hope this solves your problem.
