I have a HP Officejet printer model 6500 E709n (USB connected) and I have just changed the black print cartridge and now the printer only ptints blank ppages. I check of the printer status reveals that everything is OK and that it is in the "ready" status. I have changed several cartridges in the past without any issues. Any ideas on what has caused this latest error?

Hi! if there was a management program with the printer there should be a "cleaning the printing heads" option.

I also have the OfficeJet 6500 and had the same problem. The black text was printing using a mix of colored inks instead of the black ink, resulting in a grey, fuzzy text. I finally found a solution. In each application under Page Setup, there is an option called "Format for". Mine had been set to "Any Printer". I changed that to "Officejet 6500 E709n [830E4A]" and now it prints the black just fine. I have a Mac running 10.4.11. Hope this helps.

Horizontal streaks across the page usually mean your cartridge is about to run out, or is at least dirty. Try cleaning the nozzles, though avoid doing this manually -- your printer should have a cleaning cycle.
The squeaking noise could be dust in your rollers. That can't really be fixed without major intervention that could throw something out of balance and result in many a paper jam. You can use a lint-free, static-free cloth to gently clean inside an unplugged printer, but it's generally not a great idea to mess around in there too much.

check for ink in the black cartridge
check that the driver is still connected
check for compatibility with the pc

1. Without turning off the product, disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the product.
   NOTE: The USB cable connects to the port on the back of the product. The port is labeled with the USB icon ( ). Figure 2: Example USB connection (your product might not look exactly the same as this example)
2. Remove the cartridges from the product.
3. Wait for the 'Insert Cartridges ' message to display on the control panel.
4. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the product.
5. Wait 60 seconds.
6. Reconnect the power cord. If the product does not automatically turn on, press the Power button ( ).
7. Reinsert the cartridges, and then close any open doors on the product.
8. If you receive a prompt to print a calibration page, do so.
9. Reconnect the USB cable to the rear of the product, and then try printing again.

Solution two: Service the product If you have completed all the steps listed above and are still experiencing a problem, service the product.

My printer did that a few months ago. I tried everything to get it printing black but in the end I had to take the ink cartridge back and return a new one. Some ink cartridges dry out when they are being shipped if not stored in proper conditions.
