This could be a simple matter of a ribbon cable coming loose but since it effects two different devices on separate ribbons I would have to look at the motherboard as the cause. You are going to have to open the machine and check the connects and check for something spilled inside.

That happens a lot. You had a key stuck and it came free after you took the screws out. Have fun computing.

I can't click on anything on my home screen. Gateway N522 series. Won't tab or do anything. Helpppp!!!

Try ensuring that the touchpad hasn't been accidentally disabled (Hold down the '[fn]' key and press the F6 key on your keyboard to toggle the touchpad(mouse) to be enabled or disabled.

Have you tried using an external keyboard and mouse?

If the external keyboard and mouse work then we know it is something to do with the built in keyboard and touchpad on your laptop (likely - but not positively a hardware issue). If it does not work then we know that the issue is likely (but again not positively) software based.

My hp pavilion dv6000 touch pad locked up, it no longer responds.

Hi,

Try pressing the button above the touchpad to make the light blue, that should re-enable the touchpad again.

When writing on my dell inspiron laptop, the cursor will suddenly change position and continue with my typing in another sentence - there is no particular position on the screen it goes to - what is up...

Hello.
If you don't touch the touchpad when typing, then it's a Windows problem. You need to download this program:
http://code.google.com/p/touchfreeze/downloads/list
It's free. Basically, what it does is this: it disabled the touchpad when typing anything from the keyboard.
This problem is general to some laptops running Windows Vista or Seven. It's just like it would mistake the keys typed with touchpad instructions.

Trouble when typing on the keyboard on my sony vaio

The reason this is happening is that as you are typing; you're resting some weight on the thin plastic above the touchpad...which then makes contact and registers a 'click'; thus moving your cursor around.  Or you're brushing your thumb against it when hitting the space key.

Some laptops are more susceptible to this than others.  Some more modern laptops come with a button to turn the touchpad off to solve this very problem.

The only thing you can do about this is to disable the touchpad through the touchpad driver (down by the clock, usually) and use a mouse instead.  Depending on how you use your laptop, this will be more or less inconvenient- if your laptop never leaves the desk; disable the touchpad and use a mouse...no problem.  If you go mobile a lot, you'll have to enable and disable the touchpad all the time.

The other thing you can do is adapt your typing style so you don't put any weight on anything but the key you're pressing.  This is quite difficult and uncomfortable, and is not recommended for long sessions.

Gateway NV73 series (Win. 7) Synaptics PS/2 TouchPad not working.

At the top of your keyboard you will find some illuminated icons.
Find the one that looks like a finger on a touchpad and run
your finger over it. This activates or deactivates the touchpad.

My keyboard keeps writing out of order - putting words infront of stuff i have previously typed - toshiba Satellite laptop

Does the laptop have a touchpad below the keyboard?
Usually the hand position when you type is such, that it's very easy to involuntarily lighlty touch the touchpad with the base of your thumb, usually the right one, when you move the hand over the touchpad, mostly in the up-left direction.
This causes the cursor to move to some place up and to the left, resulting in the next characters you type being put in that place :)
Try to keep your hands a little bit more above the touchpad when you type. Also, many touchpad drivers have settings for ignoring light touches/drags, try looking into these settings in your pointing device properties.

Daughter has similiar problem with keyboard on inspiron 1545

Dont just fall for their promises. If your external keyboard works fine, it is surely a manufacturing fault. Insist on a replacement or a service. Tell them your external keyboard works fine and make sure you sound like a techie. People at those companies think we are dummies. Good luck

My inspiron 1525 has a keyboard problem everytime i am typing it jumps back do you have any idea what's going on?

I've been struggling with this issue as well. I type really fast so I thought i was inadvertantly hitting the touchpad and moving the cursor. Maybe, maybe not. But today I discovered that changing one of the dafault settings for the touchpad has eliminating the jumping cursor trouble and I can type fast again without constantly checking my screen to see which line I'm actually typing in.

Here's what I did: Go to the control panel and the mouse and click on the icon for the touchpad and uncheck the touchpad setting "tap to click"

I also put my speed and sensitivity about in the mid-range. (Another suggestion that didn't work was to make my touchpad less sensitive).

Happy typing!
