Check the inside of the chuck at the bottom(open the chuck to max). There should be small screw there with either a hex or a Phillips head. It is a left hand screw that locks the chuck in place and will not let it unscrew when you are removing parts.. If it is not there then you will have to get one from an old drill that is junk unless you can get one from an electrical appliance shop the repairs drills.

I bought new batteries for ,my dewalt dw958 drill and when I put the battery in, the drill ran for about 45 seconds then started to smoke and the drill died. The batteries are dewalt 18v xrp batteris

I am thinking the switch or motor is bad, check the switch first. you can locate parts at dewaltservicenet.com. Make a wiring diagram before removing anything, these parts are polarity sensitive.

Remove existing phillips no chuck avalible in this model

Take a phillips screw driver and stick it into one of the key holes. Then take a flat head screwdriver and stick in one of the slots. And prise against the phillips.

Or you can wrap a belt or strap around the chuck hold it tight, then put the drill in reverse and unscrew it.

How to disassemble a dewalt 14v battery

to take the battery apart you have to carefully cut it on the seam they are molded together. i am guessing you are hoping to replace the cells inside of it to repair the battery. I have done this a few times and can take quite a bit of patience and a good meter to figure out which ones are bad. make sure when you put it back together use some good qaulity abs cement so the battery does not come apart on you while using it.
