I have a Noma model signature 1340, 12.5 HP riding tractor. i am not sure of the age. last time we used it to cut grass, it worked great. we parked it in the shed. went to use again and it starts and runs fine but won't move forward or back. it has a hydrostatic transaxle. fluid level is good and the belt is not slipping, in fact when you rev the engine and set the transmission lever to full speed (forward or reverse) and start to let the clutch out, you can hear the engine speed bog down. even if you set the "push - drive" lever to push, it does not release the transaxle. it's like the thing is gear bound. i raised the back end of the tractor and i can turn the wheels (they turn in opposite directions) but if you hold one wheel stationary, the other will not turn. what is the problem? can it be fixed? approximate cost to repair or replace?

Hi, Just got your request and am now going to look up all I can find on this model of tractor. In the mean time double check your push or drive lever again to make sure it is not binding and make sure the blades are not selected, although I am sure they are not but at this point I am not ruling anything out. I will have to dig into this issue and check on the trans axle set up for you.

I seem to be having trouble posting a reply, lets see if this goes through

I can't seem to paste my notes I have written on this. So I will do this again. Basically the things that can cause this are the filter and fluid, since the fluid is full and I assume clean, then I would suggest a new filter to make sure the pressures are correct to move the tractor. I would also like you to make sure the idler spring tension good and that the spring on the idler pully is not broken. If all seems good and after changing the filter it still will not move , then I would suspect a broken drive pin in the pump. These shear off occasianally and the pump needs removed to be rebuilt. the wheels are turning like they should so I hope to rule out an issue with the gears. As far as repair cost, that varies from dealer to dealer but I would expect a charge between $100.00 and $200.00 for parts and labor on the pump rebuild. A new transaxle runs around $500.00 before labor costs

Do you know who the manufacture for the trans axle is. There should be a plate on the trans asxle that tells the manufacture, I assume it is Hydro Gearr but I can't be certain

Need a troubleshooting manual for a craftsman mod. 917.287070

Went out to cut grass and the blades will not engage and when I put it in gear it does not move. Belts are intact. I cleaned the deck of dirt and grass. Still nothing. Just replaced the cable to engage the blades last year. Cable seems to be working.

My 2 year old Husqvarna riding mower, with the welded steel deck, has the mulch kit installed ( I installed it). When cutting, the mower ususally leaves a thin line of uncut grass. More, when the grass...

I too have had that same problem. I found that "old" blades when repeatidly sharpened and worn will cause the same problem, also aftermarket blades instead of original manufactures recommended blades may not be dimensionally correct, too short. I have had to go back to using original blades to correct the problem.
This should work for you.
Good luck.

I have a model 944-604810 riding lawn mower and find that it leaves a trail of cut grass even though it is equipped with a mulching blade and a new mulching cover. It would appear that the grass is not...

yes that is most likely the cause of it, also, you have to cut more often when mulching, and the higher the cutting deck, the more likely the grass will blow out without getting mulched enough. More than likely, the blades are dull, and/or the grass is too high, or possibly even wet if it is high.

The riding mower doesn't cut evenly...one side cuts higher than the other...

The following steps will make any riding mower cut evenly.
1. The rear tires must be the same diameter i.e. same tread type and the same tire pressure (check it before each mowing).
2. Level the deck following the instructions in the manual and recheck it occasionally
3. Make sure the blade(s) are not damaged and kept sharp, rounded blades tear instead of cut.
4. Make sure the deck and its attachment points are not bent or damaged.
5. Drive at a slow walking speed with the engine at cutting speed.
6. Over lap rows in amounts sufficient to lift and cut the tire tracks from the previous pass.
7. Cut the grass at intervals that ensures you never have cut more than 1/3rd the total length of the grass.
8. Make sure the underside of the deck is clean.
9. Use a blade style that matches the type of grass you most often mow.

WHY IS CUT UN EVEN? MOWER LEAVES LINES IN LAWN

My 10 steps to ensure even cutting for any riding mower.
1. The rear tires must be the same diameter i.e. same tread type and the same amount of pressure
2. Level the deck following the instructions in the manual
3. Make sure the blades are not damaged or bent.
4. Make sure the deck nor its attachments are bent
5. keep the blades sharp and don't drive too fast when mowing.
6. Over lap rows about 20%
7. Cut the grass at intervals that ensures you never cut more than 1/3rd the total length of the grass.
9. Make sure the underside of the deck is free from chunks of clippings.
10. Use a blade with higher lift, yes you have to match the blades to the type of grass you cut most often, (commercial mowers use a universal blade and high speed decks).

Uneven grass cutting

I have seen dull blades, blades not installed right and an un-level deck cause that.

Hope this helps.

Cut grass clippings does not get picked up by riding lawnmower

When using a bagger, you need correct blades on mower or Worn blades will cause the deck not to get the vacuum needed for the bagger to pickup.

Is this the first time cutting grass with a lawn tractor?
How tall of grass?
Use the grass cutting heigth adjustments on the tractor to a higher setting when cutting tall grass. Cut again to a lower height setting on the second pass. Grass higher than your tractor is not good for your tractor. Follow the manual instructions for best results.
