Select the model of your GE phone from this list.
Which model GE phone do you have? Some of the phones were made by Thomson for GE and have their manuals here: http://www.home-electronics.net/user_guides.asp . Manuals for newer GE phones are available here: http://www.gephones.com/support/product-users-guides/ .
For the 25865 phone, you enter the menu on the handset to select Registration and then after pressing Select, press and hold the Page button on the base. The page button is at the bottom of the answering machine buttons. (The display on the handset tells you which button to press.)
On the 25835 phone, the Page button is visible when you remove the other handset from the base. (It's on the vertical section of the base that holds a handset.)
The above phones are Thomson models. The 30522 is a more recent GE phone. The Locator button on this model is the left button in the top row (above the answering system display). The icon on the button looks like a handset from an old corded phone with "ring/vibration" lines on the left of the picture.
If your phone still reads Searching after registering it, here are some trouble-shooting ideas. First make sure that the base has AC power and is connected to a working phone line. (Try using a new power cord and check if the AC adapter brick (if present) is warm.) I like to check for a working phone line with an old corded phone.
If the old phone has dial tone, I look closer at the non-working phone. Otherwise I continue to search for a phone line problem (inside wiring or outside wiring).
If the problem is at the phone, first disconnect the handset battery and reconnect it. Also reset the base by removing the power cord (from the base and then the wall outlet) and the phone line cord. Make sure that the handset battery is fully charged before trying to register the handset again. If the battery is more than a year old (including warehouse storage time), replace the battery and charge it. If it still fails, the phone needs service. If it is under warranty, contact the manufacturer. Otherwise, decide if it is worth fixing since most of these phones are not user serviceable.
I hope this helps.
