If the valves are working properly and good connections and battery, i would check to see if the compression release is working. i have one in the shop that the release came apart in the engine.

SOURCE: have john deere lt155 in storage for 3 yrs won't

sounds like one of two things can wrong...
1) the magneito may have built up a fine layer of rust up between it and the fly wheel magnets.
*solution to this is to take some fine sandpaper (wet/dry will work) and sand the magnets on the flywheel and then carefully sand the two contact post's on the magneito that face the flywheel when it turns. after this you'll have to re-gap the magneito. you can use a good crisp buisness card to do this.
loosen up the two bolts holding down the magneito (dont take them out) so that the magneito will slide to flywheel when magnet comes around...place the buisness card on magneito post's surface so that it creats a bearer between it and the flywheel (you'll have to use both hands to do this) then while holding the buisness card in place turn flywheel (by hand) (its easy and safer to remove spark plug to do this) untill magneito automatically slips towards the flywheel magnet (dont remove card yet). tighen the bolts so that the magneito stays in place while you remove the buisness card slowly so as that you dont disturb the placement of flywheel to magneito... once you tighten the bolts the rest of way you in buisness

2) the pionts might need to be re-gapped or even replaced.
* they are located under the flywheel of mortor. you'll have to take it off to get this far..
i would try the magnneiot solution first.

SOURCE: 15hp kohler in my john

If the smoke is blue you are leading oil past the seals, if its black you are running a rich mixture. since its been sitting around for a while you may also have a lot of varnish buildup in the cylinders which will take a while to burn out and will smoke until it does. If its blue the engine needs new piston rings, not terribly difficult, but not quick fix.

SOURCE: why is there gas in

Look at the carberator...is there a wire going to it? If there is a wire then there is a fuel shut off solenoid...these solenoids tend to get sticky and will not close all the way allowing fuel to keep flowing into the engine..even when it's off...you can try to clean the solenoid, but i have had better luck with just replacing the solenoid

Why will engine not start.

first make sure battery is fully charged and in good shape. Be sure pto is off and brake/clutch pedal is depressed. If still nothing then check fuse. After that its likely a safety switch or bad connection.

I also have a John Deere LT155 Garden Tractor, and 'I have issues with white smoke and cannot get it started. I have detected gas smell in the oil. Quick call to a JD service centre told me it was likely a head casket. If the smoke is white, then that is likely your problem.

I have googled LT155 and came upon john deere LT155 lawn tractor(noncurrent). It took me to John Deere's site. I put in your model number and it had several catagories. I would try the alphabetical list, go to B and look for traction belt.
Good day.
