So, I want to play multiplayer Minecraft on a self-hosted server with my friends, but for some reason, my Port Map application (I'm on a Mac) doesn't recognize the router. I disabled NAT, but soon after had speed problems with the internet. I suspected something weird was going on, so I made a factory reset and re-enabled NAT. I don't want to make my network vulnerable to attacks, so I'm trying to find a way to play on my server without disabling NAT. I tried putting my ip address on the DMZ section in the configuration page, but Port Map still says the router is incompatible. Also, I already have UPnP enabled. Suggestions, anyone?

SOURCE: Getting PS3 NAT Type 2 with Netopia Router ???

I have nat type 1 with this router but no upnp. access your router. click on advanced setup, click on configure, click on connection, choose ppp over ethernet llc/snap scroll down and click on save and restart connection. call your internet provider and get the username and password for your router. you will need it later. on your ps3, go to network settings, select internet connection settings. the ps3 will ask if you want to continue, select yes.select custom, wired connection, auto detect, PPPoE, enter the username and password you got from your isp, select automatic, automatic, do not use, enable, then press the x button to save, press the x button again to test connection

SOURCE: ok my nat type is strict and i am trying to change to open

You want the NAT open for X-box ?

For X-box you will need to open some ports on the router.

Also you will need to reduce down the MTU on the router to 1365.
That will work.
for this you will need to open the router set up.

Cannot Connect to Minecraft Server

Try changing the server port in the server.properties file. There may be another program using this port. If that does not wor try to start the server without being connected to a network (note when the server is changed you must append it to the ip. For example 192.168.1.2:25564)

How to play minecraft

Minecraft is and easy but challenging game to play. First thing you will need to do is buy the game or try the demo at www.minecraft.net. Once install open up the game and choose the type of game you would like to play. If survival mode you want to build a house or tunnel to hide in at night so the ghouls don't kill you. Minecraft is a game of crafting and building pretty much any structure you can imagine. You can also join someone else's server by finding the ip their server is hosted on!

There can be particular issues related
to playing through a router or firewall,
including sharing your internet
connection via another PC. In order to
join or host a Conflict: Global Storm
game from behind a firewall you must
open the following ports (inbound and
outbound):

UDP ports 4658, 6500, 10010,
13139, 27900

TCP ports 4658, 6667, 28910,
29900, 29901, 29920

To host a game from behind a router
with NAT (Network Address
Translation), or a firewall, you will
need to enable ‘port forwarding’ on
the following ports to route data to the
IP address of your PC;

UDP ports 4658, 6500

TCP port 4658

If you continue to have problems
connecting to servers or creating
them, try bypassing your router or
firewall by connecting your PC directly
to your broadband connection.

If possible make sure you or your friends are not behind NAT or firewall. It is much easier to connect if you have all public IPs and not something starting with 192.168...

Do not use ALT+TAB and do not enter Windows when multiplayer is running. It will kill the connection to GameSpy servers that are needed even when you are creating server to your own computer.

Sometimes in the lobby the server just dies quietly and you need to the restart the whole game. You will notice this when players just stop coming to your server. This usually happens because you switched to Windows even for one second and sometimes it just happens without any reason.
