Go to Sound section in Control Panel.
Check if the box for speakers is checked. If it is then no problem. Otherwise check it and then press OK.
Also, Check if the volume switch is not placed on Mute.

This is due to the internal speakers which might need replacing, it sounds better with external speakers because they are plugged into the headphone socket which shows the internal speakers are damaged, get them checked out.
hmmm.... did you try plugging to where the speakers go??? is this a Tower or Lap Top?? if it's the Lap Top, you might have to do the following... Right click My Computer, go to Properties, Device Manager, and look for the sound part of it... uninstall the hardware, and then reinstall it again... watch for the pop up messages to confirm the re-install and a message that it's ready for use... you might have to reboot if it asks you to do so.... Do your speakers require a power source like an adapter that you forgot to plug in? make sure you plug the speakers into the correct plug on the laptop.
You should check computer speaker another computer if it is working you should check you lap top sound drives....then you need to update your sound drives...
Did you ever have sound. If you did, depending on the version of windows use the system restore feature. Windows XP can go back months, while Vista can only about a month when you show restore points older than 5 days. Just search for the system restore feature for your operating system. Use the help menu to locate the program (In vista it will be named differently but the help menu will show you where it is).
should be a speaker icon in your systray (lower right of your screen) ... you adjust the sound there. or you can go to start ... control panel and the sound menu in there.
