Are you using interfacing or "stich and sew" type support under the fabric?

To get a good result you need to interface the fabric, and use machine embroidery thread to get a silky look to the stitching. If you are stitching onto linen then you can use a tear away stabiliser and go for a small sized needle, probably size 70.

Some machines may have a fine "stitch density" adjustment too that will allow you to stretch or close up the stitching to finesse how it looks.

However, if it seems to be missing/not fully catching the lower thread in some stitches, then your timing may be slightly out. Will it sew a wide zig zag okay?

Timing is probably best adjusted by a technician so if you try the above and its still not looking good, then take it for a service.

Necchi sofia 300 machine, how do i increase stitch size for lettering?

Depends on your machine, but remember if your machine has a 5mm needleplate opening, that limits the size of the lettering you will be able to produce. Unfortunately, to get larger output, you would need to upgrade to an embroidery machine or do the lettering manually with a satin stitch. You can, after practicing, do monogramming free hand with your machine and a satin stitch. However, remember, if the stitch width is limited, even satin stitch will still be limited by that stitch width.

How do I set the stitch length and width. Have been doing as the manual said and doesn`t seem to work.

Sometimes you also need to change the foot as well for monogramming. Do check this in the manual.

Why is my bobbin thread showing?

Perhaps you should run your bobbin thread through the small hole on the lever that moves in and out. That is what you do when you sew a buttonhole, which is the kind of stitch a monogram makes. I haven't tried it because I don't do monograms, but it makes sense. Also experiement with the tension settings.

I would like to find a machine that monograms and does not cost over $500. All I want to be able to do is the traditional 3 letter monogram (larger letter in center) or a child's name, such as Charlotte...

My advice is to try going to a shop that sells machines and gives lessons for free. I bought from JoAnn's and they gave me lessons on it. I bought a Brother for $549 and I am not sorry because I actually know how to use it thanks to the girls at JoAnn's. I would not be using all of the features if I didn't have the hands on instruction. The manual is great for a refresher but nothing beats doing it and someone answering your questions. Think about it before you buy online, you may save a few bucks but in the long run you will be happy to have a relationship with people who care if you have a problem and can help you.

Using my monogram machine

The one thing I've found is that when using the fonts stored in the machine, you need to treat each as a separate design. Then you would change the size of the Center Letter. I, too, wish the manual was more instructive. It is much easier to use a separate software program where you can create lettering and monograming. Do you have PED Basic, the program that allows you to download from your computer? That is a very good investment (about $150) and you can get free designs and download purchased lettering from different web sites. There is also a good site www.embroiderydk.com where you can join for a small monthly fee and create lettering and monograming. You also have access to over 7000 designs that you can download free whenever you want. It is well worth the price of $9.00 per month and you don't have to be limited to a bunch of emboidery cards or just the built in designs on your machine. One final idea...go the Brother.com and request more instruction on the embroidery portion.
