I have a canon multifunction MX700. Suddenly, my black ink stopped printing. Printer prints in other colors. I have turned the power to both printer and computer on and off, have checked the USB cable, clearned the print cartridges and replaced the black cartridge. None of these have resolved the problem.'Any ideas on how to fix?

Dear Adrienne,First make sure that the black ink is not empty. If you are sure the black ink is full enough you need to check the print head condition. The print head may be clogged or faulty.
To fix the clogged print head, please perform the following step:

  • Print the nozzle check pattern, access the following menu on LCD: Menu>Maintenance>Nozzle Check. The good nozzle pattern should like below sample image.

I have a canon multifunction MX700. Suddenly, my - 10_5_2011_3_51_03_pm.jpg
  • If the print head nozzle missing some color (i.e Black) the perform print head cleaning: Menu>Maintenance>Cleaning. Then print the nozzle check pattern again. Note: you may repeat this step up to 3 times.
  • If the problem still remain, then you should perform Deep Cleaning: Menu>Maintenance>Deep Cleaning.
If you have perform the above steps but the problem still the same, please check whether the black nozzle missing partially or totally. The faulty Purge Unit (ink pump) may cause the same problem. I mean the purge unit does not work properly so the ink cannot flow. Good luck :)

I have done both the cleaning and the deep cleaning. Still no black ink printing. How would I check to see if the black nozzle is missing. And how would I know if I have a faulty purge unit?

  • Anonymous Oct 06, 2011

I have completed the steps you recommended and still have not resolved the problem. The nozzle appears fine.
    What is the next step?

To check the black nozzle you should print nozzle check pattern (see the sample above). In the black nozzle pattern, all lines and columns should be all present. If some lines or columns are absent means the nozzle partially missing but if nothing is printed at black nozzle black section means the nozzle totally missing.
If the nozzle partially missing, we can localize and pin point that the print head is faulty. But for the nozzle totally missing may be caused by the following: the print head is faulty, logic board (main board of the printer) is faulty, or purge unit does not work properly.
To define the problem accurately, you need compare the print head. Find the good print head and install on your machine. Print some document (about i.e: 5 pages of text ) and the print nozzle check pattern. If the nozzle pattern is good then you know that your own print head is faulty and you should replace it with new one. But...if the problem still persist, you still have 2 possibilities: logic board is faulty or purge unit does not work properly.
To check whether purge unit works properly or not, you should drain the print head manually (i.e: by using blower, suction kit, etc). After that install the print head and perform cleaning. Then print nozzle check pattern. If the nozzle check pattern is good means the purge unit works normally. Or else, purge unit is faulty.
After all, please also consider using print head cleaning liquid that you can buy at computer store. When you are sure the print head is faulty you may replace the print head with new one.

I have a Canon MX700 and suddenly I began to have problems with the color. I am using Canon ink cartridges but all my color jobs come out with only blue and black, no magenta or yellow. Every time I run...

This worked for me:
Unplug (not just turn off) the printer. Wait at least 20 seconds, then plug it back in. Hold the Feed Switch down, then turn on the printer (continue to hold the Feed Switch down). When the printer finishes cycling the paper feed, release the Feed Switch. Copy anything and it should print. You're good to go.

Try removing the print head and placing in in a shallow tray of HOT clean water for a few minutes. Then place it on a pad of paper towels to draw ink and water from the print head. Re-install in your printer and run a deep clean cycle. re-test your printer with a nozzle check. If still no ink showing at all, repeat the process. If no success after that, the print head is probably dying. Printheads can be replaced, but it is cheaper to replace the machine.

Printer won't print. Thinks ink is out. Wireless won't print and neither wired usb won't print. Happened so suddenly.

most printers will not print if color ink has run out and vise versa with the black ink, you cant bypass this, however reinstall the drivers/software for the printer it maybe be on that side

Black ink does not print. Color works fine.

The print head is probably blocked then. You may be able to get a cleaning cartrige if you look online. Failing that, it will probably need a service.

Canon PIXMA MX700 printhead immediately coated with ink, smudges

It's likely that the foam pads that the print head rests on when the printer is not in use are saturated with ink. They're to the right as you look into the printer: a rectangular one for black ink and a square one for the colored ink. If you power the printer off and back on, with the cover open, you'll see where the printhead goes to rest.

The pads aren't easy to get at, but you can blot them with a paper towel. Gummy, half-dried ink dissolves in rubbing alcohol, and you can soak a paper towel or a cotton ball with alcohol and wipe down the area. I've had good luck soaking the pads with alcohol, then blotting them dry with a rag.
