Clearing a drain tube on a refrigerator - Kenmore 64802 Top Freezer Refrigerator

Whirlpool corp., whom made this unit, had a bad design for the defrost drain tube by the compressor. Order part W10619951 and install. This is a kit to change out the current drain tube to a better one. You still have to defrost the frozen defrost drain tube but this will fix it for good.

Look at the back of the refridgerator. Typically you will be able to see the drain tube running don the back and into an evap tray underneath. Sometimes the drain tube will get plugged with nasty stuff at the evap tray, or inside the fridge at the drain entry. Cleaning the components, and blowing through the tube to make sure it is clear should solve the problems.

Trevor, more than likely you have a stopped up defrost drain. Different makes of refrigerators have different processes on how to clear the drain tube. Without knowing what kind of refrigerator it is (ie: Whirlpool, Samsung, GE), the best bet is to remove all food and drawers from the freezer so you can get to the back panel of freezer; remove the panel and there is a hole in the bottom, under the evaporator (silver coil looking thing) that may or may not be covered with ice. If ice is present use hot water to melt the ice ( you are going to need towels or a shop vac for melt water). When the ice is cleared, blow through drain tube with what ever you have. If it does not clear, check for more ice in the drain tube and remove it. Blow through drain tube again to remove the restriction. If still does not clear you may need a source of compressed air to clear the drain tube. I use a drain tool that takes a small co2 cartridge......... Hope this helps................. Ken Hawk

You will need to Clear the drain by forcing a solution of water and bleach or water and baking soda into the drain line with a basting syringe. If the solution will not flow through, slide a length of 1/4 inch flexible tubing into the drain tube to push the clog through to the drain pan. Remove the tubing after clearing the clog. This will correct the issue.

Defrost timer is working or there would not be water/ice in the bottom pan (as you describe it.). Check that the drain tube from the pan to the bottom evaproation tray under the refrigerator is clear of restriction.

Self defrosting refrigerators as well as freezers all have a defrost drain system. This drain system can become plugged or frozen causing defrost drain water to back up into the refrigerator or freezer compartment. The water may gather under the crisper drawers on top freezer models. On side by side, bottom or stand alone freezers ice will build up in the freezer at the bottom and eventually leak out the door.

At the top of the refrigerator next to the temperature controls there usually is a cup-like part that carries the defrost drain water into a tube and out the back of the refrigerator to a defrost drain pan behind the unit. Pull the cup out of the tube and clean the cup with hot water and soap. If there is no cup, pull the refrigerator out away from the wall, go behind it and disconnect the drain tube to clear it. If the drain tube is not accessible from the back or the drain can not be cleared from there the main back panel in the freezer can be removed to access, thaw and flush out the drain under the cooling coil.

Use a turkey baster to flush HOT water into the tube to clear any obstruction. The water squirted into the tube should end up in the defrost drain pan.

If the tube will not clear with hot water try blowing it out with compressed air.

Put the cup back on and make sure it is all the way on or in the tube.

Plugged Defrost Drain - Side By Side, Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator or Stand Alone Freezer

The defrost drain pan is located at the bottom of the freezer compartment behind the back wall of the freezer. On some models, the pan is accessible without removing the back panel and others are not. After you get to the defrost drain pan use a hair dryer to melt the ice from the pan.

Once the ice is removed use a turkey baster to squirt HOT water into the drain hole to clear the drain.

When the drain is clear you should hear or see the water you are squirting into the hole enter the pan under or behind the refrigerator.

Drain stopped up.
Take out the bottom drawer in the freezer, look at the back wall and you should get a partial view of the bottom of the cooling coils. Directly below these coils is the drain area. You may need a light to see the drain hole. If this area is covered with ice then a hair dryer will help clear this so you can see the drain hole.
I have some O2 tubing that I put down the drain to clear any cloggs. Also, I seal the top of the drain hole around the O2 tubing with tape and use the air from my lungs to clear the drain tube. Pour a little water down this drain hole to make sure it’s clear.
