Sl-1200MK2 Platter STUCK

Hi,

I posted this as part of my tone arm problem but haven't had any answers so I'll post it as it's own problem.

I have an SL-1200MKII and the platter is completely stuck. I've checked around, saw if you gave the middle knob a tab with a wooden hammer it can come free but this one is STUCK. It's been in storage for 5 years.

I put some WD-40 and let it sit to see if it would sink in but no luck. I've pulled very hard but am afraid of rigging something that might do serious damage.

Is there a way to get behind the platter? If I take it all apart, or is there a another suggestion someone might have?

Sorry, I was not very clear I guess.

My problem is I cannot remove the platter. It spins fine but I cannot remove the platter to make adjustments or preventive maintenance.

How can I remove a platter that is /REALLY/ jammed. Tapping, pulling don't seem to be working.

If you take off the platter does the motor spin? if not the motor isnt working. also make sure that the platter is able to freespin if not it may be unbalanced and the turntable needs to be opened up and leveled/raised. very simple its just a few screws on the motor in the center of the turntable.

Hi i would lick to send my tone arm and base off to be anodised they have asked me what metal it is made of can you please tell me also the pop up light shell.thanks

They are asking this because anodising is especially suited to aluminium alloys, but not to steel.

Anodising can be done in various colours and finishes. Steel can be chrome plated, shiny or dull, and also plated with other coloured finishes such as cadmium.

The tone arm in this photo of the SL-1200Mk2 looks to be chromed, which means it is steel. To find out use a small magnet at the midway point to see if an attraction can be felt.

The record keeps sticking in same place iv adjusted the hight weight and anti skate i know its not the carts or needles cos iv swapped those its been suggested to me tht the arm is damaged or bent even ???

Hi, have you tried manually moving the tonearm (with tt off) from its stating position across the platter to the centre? If you do this and find you get resistance at a certain point then there is damage to the tone arm base or bearings. Is the tonearm lifter going down completely?

When i press Start/Stop button, the platter is not moving/spinning. THe ON/OFF light is working, same as the pitch light and the lamp...

The chances are the rubber drive belt has either broken or stretched so that it has fallen off the drive pulleys.
You will need to gain access to the underside of the turntable to replace it.
With most turntables the process will be to secure the tone arm (a rubber band will do the trick) before turning the whole thing upside down and unscrewing the base.
Replacement drive belts are easily available on the internet. Search by make and model number of your turntable

The platter on my Technics SL 1200MK2 stopped spinning. The power works fine... the platter doesn't want to turn. It feels like it just wants to be stuck?! Never had this problem with any of Technics...

If you remove the rubber pad from the top of the platter then you should be able to lift the platter off the servo drives' center shaft,
from memory the unit is not attached just held on by gravity,if the servo magnet is gone the take it in for a service and pay the man for his time,

My first problem on my 1200s was a pitch control issue and easy to fix, with a little cash, never use second hand parts unless you know what you are doing because when they fail on you while playing to a packed dance floor then youll get more of a supprise than you barginned for,

Tone arm pulls in one direction

If the force is towards the center of the disk, it's OK, it's the antiskating force. Set antiskating at 0, set the weight at 0gr, turn around the makeweight in order to set the tone arm parallel to the disk. With the antiskating at 0 the tone arm will stay parallel to the disk in the place you leave it. With the antiskating at any other position the tone arm will stay parallel to the disk going towards the center of the disk.

In case of a problem or clarification, don't hesitate to post.

1200 platter drag

the platter should have two holes on it,my 1210 does. put your thumb on the spindle and a finger in each hole and prize the platter off. theres no screws holding the platter on just a tapered spindle shaft. it is quite heavy so a good pull will do it. as for the scraping it might be as simple as packaging placed under the platter to secure it for shipping, technics are built really well so i cant imagine it could be anything major. i hope this helps you out, if you need any more help let us know. please also let us know how you get on. darren
