Things to check first for a camera that won't turn on are battery contact points, and micro switches that are located on the battery and memory card doors. Troubleshooting tips on other things that need to be checked may be seen here. These tips won't work for every case, but they're worth a try.
If your camera is five or more years old, chances are you need a new battery. They are readily available at camera stores, or on-line, at Amazon, B&H, J&R and other internet retailers. I have had good luck with LENMAR brand, or you can pay a bit more for the Canon brand. Look on your battery for the number and type battery. I believe it's the NB-4L, but be sure to double check.
