I had same problem in DELL Latitude 6400. The cursor moves from the touch pad, but click does not works, even by attaching external mouse also click does not work. So what I did is, from run typing msconfig and from the startup tab, I deselect the tick mark for dell touchpad programs. Then it is working. Best Regards, Golamur Rahman

Will your laptop work properly with an external mouse? If so, check your touchpad settings in "Control Panel" by selecting "Mouse". Here you can reassign your Buttons. Try setting your Right Button function to "Double Click". If the "Double Click" function works on your Right Button then chances are you have a problem with your Touchpad Assembly which means it will have to be replaced. Dell refers to it as a "Palmrest" which they will replace if still under warranty.

Can't right or left click on inspirion 1501, touchpad is fine.

It would appear that the left/right touch pad buttons have failed. You will have 3 options at this point in time.
1) Use an external wireless mouse such as a Logitech Wireless Mouse M505 for roughly $39.99
2) Use alternative features on the laptop. Left click is typically simulated by tapping or double tapping the touch pad itself and right click can be simulated, in most cases, by single tapping the icon and pressing the pop-up menu button, typically located between the right alt and ctrl buttons.
3) Search for a replacement component online and replace the component. Touch pad replacement will require you to remove all casing screws from the laptop and then remove the case. You will then expose the screws and cabling for the touch pad. I can not give more detailed instructions as this varies per laptop model.

I have a Dell Studio laptop and the left click has stopped working. I can still select by tapping the touch pad, and the right click still works - but nothing happens when I push the left. Thanks!

The touch pad might need to be replaced which can be a hassle and quite expensive. If you go into the touch pad settings you can switch the left and right and also make some other adjustments. Check that one of those isn't the cause of the problem.

How to use touch pad dell latitude D610

The touch pad on a Dell Latitude D610 works much the same as with other laptops. You can move your finger around the pad to simulate the movement of a mouse, and it will cause the pointer to move across the screen. You can also tap on the touch pad (gently) to "click" on a file, folder, or other item. The touch pad on a D610 doesn't have a hardware switch like some other laptops do so that you can turn it on or off -- it's just always on.

Cursor Shift

This could be either a driver glitch or the touch pad is going out, both are common on these models. Start by uninstalling the drivers for the touch pad (some times referred to as the synaptic pointing device), then restart the machine. The machine will find the touch pad and reinstall the drivers automatically. If it's a simple glitch, this will fix it. If it persists, then the pad is failing and will need replaced. The only other thing you might try is to adjust the cursor speed or touch pad sensitivity from the control panel. This will sometimes help to dampen the effect, but usually won't get rid of it entirely.

Touch pad not working

That's a sign that the synaptic touch pad needs to be replaced. Eventually they wear out.

Mouse cursor moving by itself

i have latitude c610 and same problem happens with me too. i think that happens when i finish my brakfat and without cleaning my hands start using the touch pad. what happens according to me is that small particles of food(eg bread/dust particles) stuck in the corners or the body wall where the touch pad ends and keeps pressing the touchpad, thus causing the mouse to move to one direction. when i clean the corners and sides of the touchpad, it starts working ok !!

thanks
