Greetings. I am having a similar problem with my laptop. Works fine with an external monitor. I replaced the inverter which did not make a difference. I had not tried wiggling the rubber screen shut-off button until reading your post a few minutes ago. That did restore the screen, but I suspect this is not much of a fix. Any ideas?

I have not hooked my laptop to an external monitor yet but my screen is also black on my presario R3000. Any solutions would be helpful.

If you already replaced the inverter and the screen still continues dark, you need to replace your lcd screen. Your video card is good due you have signal with external monitor.

The problem you described, is related to the inverter board.
There's a little board, that take care of lights on the monitor. You must replace the inverter board to solve the problem.
Here you have an image, of an inverter board.
Good luck, and be safe!
Inverter boards, it's dangerouse to replace yourself if you don't know what you are doing. High-Voltage inside :)
I would say you either have a damaged inverter board or screen baclight lamp. Usually the inverter board fails in one of the following ways:
1. When you turn on the laptop, the screen lights up for a short period of time and then goes dark. You still can see an image but it is very dark, almost invisible and definitely not usable. When you restart the laptop, the screen lights up and then goes dark again. The laptop works fine with an external monitor. 2. Your laptop turns on but the screen remains dark all the time. You still can see a very dim image outline. The laptop works fine with an external monitor. 3. The laptop screen works fine for hours or even days, but sometimes it goes very dark as it mentioned above. When you restart the laptop, the screen works fine again.
Inverter failure symptoms are very similar to backlight lamp failure symptoms and in most cases you cannot tell which one is causing the problem until you replace either the inverter board or the backlight lamp. From my personal experience, inverter boards fail more often than backlight lamps. If you have to guess, replace the inverter first.

If the power totally fails (i.e. power is cut off, LEDs turn off, fans stop, ... etc), then this more likely to be because of a short circuit developing in a failing semiconductor component, or a power supply problem.
However, if the laptop is still running & only the display on its LCD is cut off but the laptop itself stays powered on, then your laptop might be experiencing a failing screen inverter board, a failing screen backlight lamp, or a failing LCD screen cable.

Lines on the screen means the LCD is bad and needs to be replaced. The inverter just makes sure the lcd turns on. That wouldn't cause lines on the screen.
have you any other A/V ports out ie Svid etc if so try that via an A/V lead, if that works reset your bios settings to minimal settings, if that doesnt work search the 'net someone somewhere has had the same problem! try shining a flashlight/lamp onto the screen whilst booting up, if you see anything on the screen then your inverter is definatly gone and yes it could still be your inverter! your laptop may have software/hardware issues with an external monitor?
Sounds like the auto-dim in the BIOS is set too low. Fortunately the Compaq R3000 allows you to adjust the brightness right from the keyboard. Hold down the [FN] function key while tapping the [F8] key will brighten the screen, while [FN]-[F7] will dim it. The settings are different for running on AC power and battery, so you must do each individually.
does the fan work ok? and do you have a laptop holder for it or you just have it on a desk ....get a laptop holder for it if you do not have one and as for the rest goto the power mangment area on the computer and see if the monitor might be on stand by after a few min ...
maybe the problem is connection cable between monitor n cpu, try to open n close your monitor. then try on again, if not u have to bring service center
