When I use my Sony IC Recorder as an MP3 player, I have successfully downloaded and played audiobooks from my library's online audiobook source. All of a sudden, my computer tells me that the audiobook's parts have downloaded to track B (the one I always use) of my IC Recorder; but when I disconnect my IC Recorder from the computer's USB port, there is nothing listed in track B. It's empty. I recall briefly clicking into and out of a Roxio box--could I have disconnected something crucial?

SOURCE: Sony IC Recorder ICD B600

To transfer recordings from the Sony ICD-B600 to Windows first buy a Radio Shack #42-2497 cable. Connect the cable from the recorder headphone jack to the computer microphone jack. In Windows XP follow the path: start, All Programs, Accessories, Entertainment, Sound Recorder. This small window will allow you to record 60 seconds of sound to a file. Get Article #82215 from the Microsoft web site. It will tell you how to make extended recordings. I was able to record 45 minutes continuously. The recorder is turned on by moving the 'HOLD' switch down. The recorder is turned off by moving the 'HOLD' switch up and waiting 2.5 seconds. Have fun.

I am trying to download an audiobook file (WMA) from my library website to my Coby 601. The library uses a program called overdrive to download to handheld devices. It says my Coby does not recognize WMA...

The player does in fact play WMA files. However, if the audiobook is a protected audiobook that you purchased, the Coby device cannot play what is called DRM protected files. While Overdrive supports the playback of these files, the Coby player may not, or you no longer have authorization to play the file.

I have downloaded audiobooks from library, message to synchronize

Maybe you do need to synchronize. Some websites, require you to synchronize the files before you can play them. It is just their way of locking you down to their rules :D.

I have a Philips GOgear SA5285 and I can load the audible audiobooks and they go to the audiobook file but when I load my library books from Netlibrary.com they load as songs and do not have book marks, so...

If you are a newbie, and you primarily want the mp3 player for audiobooks, then go ahead and take this player back to the store - I'll tell you why:
The deal between Audible and Philips fell through before the latest series of GoGear's was released. Therefore, even though the player has an Audible folder, it will not properly play Audible audiobook files. Sad, but true.

Your post reminds me that I need to write a Consumer Watch article on mp3 players that claim to play audiobooks - 90% of them will not easily allow you to play audiobooks - you will have to jump through hoops.

If you still want to try, here is what you want to do:
1. Delete any audiobooks off the GoGear, but make sure that you have a copy of the audibooks on your computer itself.
2. Open Windows Media Player. Find your audiobook files in your library. If they don't show up, then you will have to move your mouse over the Library tab - a small black arrow should appear underneath the word "Library" - click the black arrow and select "Add to Library". Click "Add" and find the folder in which your Audible files are stored. It may take several minutes, but Windows Media Player will add these files to Windows Media Player.
3. Right-click an Audiobook file starting with Chapter 1 of whatever book, and select "Advanced Tag Editor". One-by-one, manually assign an a track number to each audiobook chapter - Track 1 for Chapter 1, Track 2 for Chpater 2, etc.
4. Now, re-add the audiobook files to your GoGear.
5. You might additionally have to go into the Settings menu of your GoGear, and turn Shuffle mode off - your user's manual can show you how to do this.

Sound like a lot of work? You betcherbottom dollar it's a lot of work. This particular mp3 player is not the best for audiobooks.

Turn shuffle off - p.16 of your manual - to get songs to play in sequential rather than random order.

Download audio book

I bought a MuVo V100 specifically because a sister uses it very successfully for audio books. I'm still learning because it doesn't seem easy to do, but she managed fine. So don't assume it won't work for books.

The icons are confusing to deal with but the book will be in the "folders." When you find Library A, you push the button thing IN. Then you scroll sideways until your title comes up.

I've done it myself but kind of accidentally. Can't do it twice the same way!
