I have a sony big screen kp57wv600 and the picture looks like I need 3D glasses. The pictures has a green and red hallo all around the outer picture. The picture is clear in the center and goes out and is double, one is green and one is red it arches. The problem started with a green arch on top and bottom then progresses to this. Is there a bulb to replace? What can I do or is my TV junk now?

Sir the problem of your tv is the convergence to narrow the problem try to adjust first the convergence settings using your original remote go to setting menu then to the convergence setting, you can adjust the red and blue convergence, you should be able to adjust the red and blue left, right and up, down you should align the red and blue to green but if you cannot move them far enough or if you cant move them in any direction the convergence IC is already defective replacing this IC will fix the problem, you will find this convergence IC attach to a large aluminum plate this aluminum plate is the heat sink. It is easy to locate if you remove the back cover of your unit be sure to unplug your TV
I have a sony big - ekcnoel_17.jpeg
this is the convergence IC if you remove this try to observe also if there is a cold solder or dry joint because sometimes this cause your convergence to malfunction observe the solder part of the convergence.

This is a cold solder or dry joints you can fix this by resoldering using a soldering iron, soldering lead, and desoldering pump but be sure not to connect separated pins it may cause much damage to unit if accidentally solder together. To replace the IC convergence try to check this link http://www.tvrepairkits.com/xcart/product.php?productid=19971&cat=1538&page=1 hope this helps good day and best regards.

My picture has broken into colour ghosting (it looks like a 3d picture without the glasses on). I'm guessing that this might be the failure of one of the colour bulbs. The wavey colour bands that I see are...

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

3d look with little bending in bottom left corner of screen.

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

Display looks like you need 3D glasses to view.

Sounds like a convergence problem. Especially since you said that the screen(picture)wasn`t linear anymore.

If the magic/touch focus function doesn`t clear the problem then your convergence modules may be faulty. They are used to align the three tubes (red/green/blue) deflection. If you feel handy with a soldering iron i could assist you in replacing them, otherwise you might need the help of a local repair tech. Hope this help. Good luck

The tv picture looks like should be wachting it whith 3d glasse

This is a very common failure on Projection TV sets. Its called a convergence failure. Here are some common symptoms.
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
The other common problem is cloudy lens fluid. After many years the coolant in the blue and green lens will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, bright white, etc. You may even see halos around objects on the screen.

My Sony KP-53HS30 rear projection tv looks like a 3d movie without the glasses. It comes and goes and sometimes will have red, green, blue squigley lines all over the picture

Projection TV sets are known to have two common problems. The first problem that is common to these sets is convergence failure. When this happens the TV will usually look 3D, Wavy/Distorted, etc. It may also shutdown and blink an error code.

The second common problem with Projection TV sets is dull video, halos around objects, white looking video, or red overpowers the screen. This is commonly caused by the fluid in the lens being clouded overs.

Picture looks like 3D without 3D glasses on???

The cost I don't know, but this can be fixed. I'd say shop around a bit. Make sure the repair person is certified for your TV's manufacturer. There are generally 3 lamps in projection T.V.'s, Red, Green, and Blue. They have to be aligned for the TV to project a clear picture. A credible TV repairman should be able to fix it. Depending on if it's new enough to be under warranty they may cover it as well. Really the only reason to get rid of it is if you want to get a new TV anyway. Depends on the cost of having the lamps aligned.
