Hello Donna , If by saying "stays lit" ya mean that the flame goes off when turning off the knob yet it continues to spark all the time ?? if yes that's whats happening the flame goes off but it keeps sparking whats wrong it that the switch that turns on the spark when the knob is turned is bad and that is what needs to be replaced. GE only makes that switch available in a complete assembly with all 5 switches and the wiring for it. It's not to bad to replace that actually, what ya would need to do to replace that switch harness asm. ya need to take off the main top which can be done by removing the burner grates and caps from the burners, then is the outer center of each burner will be 2 screws remove those screws from all burners then the all 5 knobs and the top will lift off, that switch harness has keyed plugs and will only fit in one way so its not to bad to replace it. The part number for that switch/wire harness asm. is WB18T10381 it could be purchased at your local appliance parts store or online at; searspartsdirect.com apdepot.com partselect.com apwagner.com repairclinic.com Thank you for using Fixya.Com,if you should require further assistance please reply and i will be happy to help, GENE
I have had this same issue with continuous sparking after a burner was lit. Problem 1. Wet or dirty ignitors/burners. Solution: clean and/or dry (I assume this resolves electrical issues). This has usually solved the problem Problem 2. Stuck or dirty control switch. Solution: remove knobs and spray electrical-cleaner into switches. AMAZING... no more clicking plus burners now burn hotter when set to HI. I assume this frees-up the movement of the switch to prevent it thinking you are pushing it ON... and thus asking for spark... plus greater range of switch and/or higher flame settings available once lit. A no-cost miracle! ( I used "PureTronics" brand Electrical Contact Cleaner spray can, 1 sec, 2X). Mike S
Usually this is the two gas valve solenoids, though it can also be a bad flame sensor or thermo. The solenoids are easy to change, they are right in front and usually have two screws holding them down. Order new solenoids by model number. Once you have the new ones you will see how they look and where they go on your gas burner. Just make sure you make not of the wire positioning and install the new ones the same way. Usually 3 wires on one side and two wires on the other. Parts are pretty cheap. Before I replace these I put an electrical testor on the solenoids to test if there is 120 volts coming in when the burner stops working. If their is 120 volts and the ignitor is glowing then you definitely have bad solenoids. Good Luck, Appliance Specialists.
The clicking is the igniter. If it is clicking and not lighting, then you may have to purchase an igniter kit and replace it. the relays can go bad, or igniter fails.
there are two small holes at the base of the burner where the pipe goes up to it but doesn't touch. i had the same problem and it turned out that these two holes were clogged. i just straightedend a paper clip and solved the problem
