Hi churro666,

Here are troubleshooting steps to help you track down problems such as jerky
playback, pauses, error messages, and so on.

* Get updated drivers. Driver bugs are the biggest cause of playback
problems, ranging from freezes to bogus error messages about regions.
Go to the support section on the Web sites of your equipment
manufacturers and make sure you have the latest decoder drivers as
well as the latest drivers for your graphics adapter and DVD-ROM
drive.
* Make sure DMA is turned on. For Windows, go into the System Properties
Device Manager, choose CD-ROM, open the CD/DVD driver properties,
choose the Settings tab, and make sure the DMA box is checked.
Caution: You may run into problems with an AMD K6 CPU. Check for a
BIOS upgrade and a CD/DVD-ROM driver upgrade from your system
manufacturer before turning DMA on.
* If you get an error about unavailable overlay surface, reduce the
display resolution or number of colors (right-click desktop, choose
Settings tab).
* Try turning off programs that are running in the background. (Close or
exit applets in the Windows system tray.)
* If you are using a SCSI DVD-ROM drive, make sure that the it's the
first or last device in the SCSI chain. If it's the last device, make
sure it's terminated. I hope this helped a litte.

Thanks for using FixYa.com

Sincerly, cyyyd7

SOURCE: my dvd driive in my computer won't play dvds

Do you mean DVD movies wont play? If so you need to install DVD software. Use Google to search for some or buy some e.g. PowerDVD.

My CD/DVD drive won't read/play DVDs and it won't write DVDs either. It used to do this fine, but it doesn't anymore. It will still play and write CDs, but not DVDs. I have tried EVERYTHING to...

You probably will need to replace the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) in your laptop. Go to Google and search for "Dell Inspirion 6000 CD/DVD drive" to find a replacement.
To be sure it's the CD/DVD drive that's defective and not your operating system software, you could also try to boot from a boot-able DVD disk.

The drive does not play cds nor dvds. However, it burns both cds and dvds very well. What is wrong here? How do I fix it?

The image receiver is probably bad inside the laser lens. When the laser light emits and reflects back from the disk, the receiver should pick-up the light - in this case it doesn't. It lights up because you can burn. Try another drive - external (USB) or internal (replace the one inside the computer).

Does the toshiba sd 2502 , can it burn cds

It is a DVD ROM drive which stands for DVD Read Only Memory. In other words, this drive is meant to only PLAY DVDs and CDs but NOT save data to them.

To burn CDs you need a CD burner. Burners are of 3 types:

CD writer only burns and reads CDs.

Combo drive reads CDs and DVDs but only burns CDs.

Super drive burns and reads from CDs and DVDs.

As you go higher in functionality, the price also increases. Check your needs before you plan to buy one. Also compare prices of all the drives. Note: burn-able media costs are separate.

I can burn cd's but not dvd's

Hello Rfd832,
What I see from the description is that the drive is a combo drive. Combo drives are CD-RW and DVD-ROM drives means
CD-RW = Compact Disk-Read Write
DVD-ROM = Digital Versatile Disk - Read Only Memory
so these drives can read and write CDs but can only read DVDs (Cannot write or burn DVDs)
If you want to be able to burn DVDs then you need to have DVD RW drive (either DVD+RW or DVD-RW)

You said that you are able to burn DVDs on other computer so please check the label on the DVD drive.. it should be DVD-RW/DVD+RW drive

Hope that helps.. :)

Thanks and Regards,
Srinivas

Why my [sony cd rw dvd rom] will not detect a blank dvd disk

If you have the sony CD RW DVD ROM then you can't burn the data in a blank DVD.

Because your Configuration is :
Read : CD / DVD
Write : CD

This means you have a combo drive. But to burn a DVD you should have DVD RW.

My dvd drive in my computer won't play dvds

1. Completely remove any dvd/cd player/burner softwares (i.e. Nero, Power DVD, etc.).
2. Go to device manager and remove your DVD/CD device from the device list
3. Restart you laptop
4. Windows will then try to reinstall the device drivers again for the DVD drive.
5. After another restart, then reinstall your dvd softwares again.

Reads all but DVD-Help PLEASE

When you say it won?t read are you trying to play commercial DVD movies or read DVD data disks? If you're trying to play movies then you need a couple of things the first being some type of player program. Real player works as does Windows media player but usually DVD drives come with a striped down version of PowerDVD or WinDVD. If you in fact have a player installed and when a DVD is inserted in your drive it doesn't play it may not be configured to automatically play DVDs. Try opening your player program and trying to manually play your DVD. Let us know if you have any success or if you need more assisted. If you do let us know what player program and operating system you have and any error messages that may appear.
