We get hd channels but can not get a couple of them. Don't think it is a cable problem. What do you suggest?

It's not the TV from what I can tell. I would start complaining about it and say you want a brand new box. Not used. They tend to give out boxes from people who previously had them and either didn't pay their bill or moved and clean them up.

John, do you have an HD cable box? If not, you will not be able to watch anything in HD....call your cable provider if you don't have it.

It's possibly a defective digital tuner, but the vanishing menu suggests a more serious (and expensive) fault with the main/AV board, assuming it's an LCD TV. It's impossible to be certain which one without doing some testing, but due to the inherent dangers with high-voltage electronics, I don't advise on self-repair for TVs.

If you're looking for an inexpensive solution and the TV is no longer covered by any warranty, I'd suggest buying an external Freeview box to connect to your TV. This would also enable you to upgrade to Freeview HD. Being 4 years old, your TV will not have been fitted with a DVB-T2 (Freeview HD) tuner.

They are described as "reconditioned", but I've bought and installed 2 of these for my own customers recently and both have been brand-new. The majority of these are unused returns which Tesco are consequently not allowed to sell described as "new". For a lesser known brand, I've been quite impressed with some of the recent Technika products and they are easy to install and come supplied with all the necessary cables, etc. Additionally, if it doesn't work for any reason, you will be able to return it under UK Distance Selling regulations.

Before purchasing this (or any other) Freeview HD box, please check your TV has a spare HDMI input socket as SCART cannot carry an HD signal. If you don't have a spare HDMI socket, I'd also check your TV has a spare SCART input socket or you will need to disconnect your Sky box every time you want to use the Freeview box - which brings me to my final point . . .

. . . Off the top of my head, I can't think of any Freeviews channels which aren't available on Sky, so as long as you can still use your TV for Sky, do you really need to spend any money on it?

That sounds like an antenna problem. Try moving your antenna around and rescanning the channels.

Yes the display settings need to be reset since he had HDTV and you don't. I do this by simply having the PS off then press power button and hold it for 5 seconds.

Hi, I can't say I've ever seen that happen with that TV before so I'd say it definitely isn't common. I'm pretty sure it's the signal from the HD channels, I'd suggest talking to your cable service provider.

1. Before we begin: First you need an HD source (HD Cable, Blu-Ray Player, HD Media Player) and HDMI cables in order to receive HD signals. HDMI cables look like this:


Do not buy them in a store, they will only rip you off and despite what the salesman will tell you, all HDMI cables are EXACTLY the same regardless of price and no, gold-plating does nothing to improve a signal. Digital signals are ones and zero's and are not subject to degradation that analog signals are. I would recommend going to Monoprice for all of your cabling needs and get at least a six-foot HDMI cable.

If you are cable or satellite subscriber, please note that you MUST HAVE an HD Receiver, Convertor Box or DVR. If you were previously using a cable box, DVR or satellite receiver on a standard definition television, it WILL NOT receive HD signals and therefore you will not have an HD picture on your TV. Also, an upconverting/upscaling DVD player is not an HD source. DVD's are in SD and depsite the fact that they are upscaled, you cannot change the fact that they are recorded in SD and will display in SD on your screen despite that your TV will tell you that you are viewing a 720p (HD) picture. it will certainly look better than a non-upconverted/upscaled DVD but it won't be HD and you'll be able to tell the difference with HD Cable and Blu-Ray.
The only two ways to get HD channels without HDMI is by getting them over the air, and directly through your coaxial cable from your cable provider without the use of the box, however, not all Cable companies send the signal to be converted by the digital tuner in your television and if they do, they do not support it in their terms of service so if they stop working, you're out of luck. Also, whereas the your local provider may offer 50 -100 channels in HD through their HD Converter or DVR you will only be able to get the five major networks and Univision through the coaxial feed. The same goes for over the air HD signals via an antenna.
2. Connections: I'm proceeding from the premise that you have an HD source as described above with HDMI-Out ports. With your TV powered on and your HD Source powered on, connect one end of the HDMI cable to your HD source and the other end to one of the two HDMI-In ports on the back of your TV (your choice). Because it's an HDMI interface, the television will automatically detect the incoming HD source, turn on the HDMI port of the TV and set the resolution accordingly to the HD Source.
Keep in mind that as this a 16:9 Aspect Ratio display, some shows may still show up in the old 4:3 ratio with black bars on the sides of the picture (also, SD Channels will not appear in HD). This is completely normal and for the best viewing experience possble you should keep the black bars and not "stretch" or "zoom in" on those programs as doing this, despite filling your screen. will distort the images and just make them... well... ugly.
NOTE: If your HD source is a cable box, DVR or satellite receiver, you may have to go into the settings menu and into the Audio Menu of those units and set the audio to "HDMI-Out." Again, this should automatically happen when the connection is made but if you have no audio, that's the solution. Also, in the settings menu you will find the video menu and in that video menu you may find a resolution menu with a list of the different resolutions that the box/DVR will display (480i, 480p, 720i, 720p, 1080i). Uncheck all of them except for 720p (as that is your TV's maximum display resolution). If you don't, every time you change channels from a channel that displays in one resolution to a channel that displays in another, there can be a delay of up to 30 seconds. By keeping your resolution constant there is no delay when changing channels and the lower resolution channels are simply upconverted to 720p.
Your connections are now complete and you now have HD and are ready to go.
3. Some Final Thoughts: First, please keep in mind that your television has a maximum resolution display of 720p which means that Blu-Ray (1080p) and 1080i signals will be downgraded automatically for your TV. I want you to be aware of this just so you understand that even though you may have higher resolution sources, your TV's capability is what it is so don't be concerned if you are watching a Blu-Ray and your TV indicate that it's in 720p. The fact is that for any display under 40", you don't need anything above 720p as the screen size is too small for your eyes to see a difference. I personally have a 32" 720p Vizio and a 65" 1080p Mitsubishi and the Vizio looks great in 720p.

Lastly, I highly recommend you getting a Blu-Ray calibration disc with color filters for your TV (if you don't plan on getting Blu-Ray then get the DVD). They are about $20 on Amazon and though they take about an hour to get the hang of, they will help you achieve the absolute best picture possible for your new TV. TV's are preset with settings to make them pop-out in store displays and they are not optimal for home viewing. I waited a year to get one for my 65" and when I did it was like I got a brand new TV. The difference is outstanding and it's a small investment to make for what a professional will charge $200 - $300 to do. Here's a link for both DVD and Blu-Ray calibration discs.

Cable: First you need to be using an HD Cable box to get the HD channels that your provider offers. if you don't, you can't get HD channels. Keep in mind that not all of the channels that your provider offers are in HD. Out of the 300+ channels that my provider Cox Communications in Las Vegas offers, they offer 91 of them in HD. If you have an HD box, you need to go into the settings menu and make sure that your video output is set to constant as you do not want it bouncing between different resolutions when you change channels. In your case you will have two options, 720p and 1080i (1080p does not exist for cable due to the amount of bandwidth required). Choose 720p because your set is under 40" and you won't see a a difference between 720p and 1080i except for that because it's progressive, HD may actually look better. (NOTE: although your analog channels will display at 720p, they are not in HD. They are simply up converted SD so don't expect that they will look like HD channels.) Also be sure to set your audio settings on your box to "HDMI out."
In general, HDMI devices should automatically detect HDMI input but since I don't know what kind of box you are using, it is possible that HDMI-out is disabled in the settings. My box (Scientific Atlanta) doesn't have that option, but I don't know about others. As far as the set is concerned, plug the HDMI cable into the input you want to use (if it's a new Vizio, I'm assuming there are three inputs as that's what my 32" Vizio in the kids' room has) and the set will auto-detect the HDMI input and automatically set the resolution accordingly.
SIDE NOTE: The only other way you're going to get HD channels from cable without a box is if you're using your COAX cable directly in to the TV and that is only if your cable provider has them floating on the line and you're only going to get the 5 major networks and Univision in HD.
PS3: This is even easier. WIth your PS3 powered off and your TV powered on, connect one end of your HDMI cable to the HDMI out on the PS3 and the other end to the appropriate HDMI input on your TV (of your choosing). Power on your PS3. Your TV will automatically detect the HDMI input from the PS3 and put that HDMI input on the screen. You will get an on-screen message from the PS3 detecting HDMI and it will ask you if you want o use HDMI or words to that effect (I can't remember the exact message... it's been a while). Choose "yes" and it will adjust the picture accordingly and should automatically choose the highest video resolution your television can display. To verify your settings, first hit the "guide" button on your Vizio remote control and in the upper right corner it will tell you at exactly what resolution it is displaying at. If it's not where you want it to be, on your PS3, go the Settings Menu and scroll down to "Display Settings" and the first item on the list is "Video Output Settings." Follow the step by step on screen menu prompts to determine your display settings, and choose "automatic" when prompted. If everything is copasedic, the highest resolution your television can display at will be listed at the top (and will be the current setting) and all of the other resolutions will be listed below it. If something is wrong between the "handshake" between the HDMI from the PS3 to the TV and it doesn't display in HD, go back into Video Output Settings" and when prompted, choose manual in stead and set the resolution on the PS3 the highest your TV can display. NOTE: Most 32" TV's have a maximum resolution of 720p fir the reasons I stated earlier. Check your manual for the specifics on yours. Furthermore, all PS3 games are in 720p so even if you have a 1080p TV, don't expect higher resolutions than that. AS far as Netflix is concerned, not all of their programming is in HD. The scale for Netflix is SD/Low/Medium/High/X-High. HD/Low/Medium/High/X-High, your quality depends on the program and strength of your Internet connection.
Closing: I'm a little confused by your issue as HDMI is automatic and you should automatically be getting HD so the only other thing I can think of is that your display needs calibrating and you just think you aren't getting HD. In order to get the most out of your new TV and your PS3, I would highly recommend that you calibrate your set with a Blu-Ray calibration disc that comes with color filters. It will take you about an hour or so to get the hang of and use correctly but the results will be very noticeable. The presets that come out of the box and the settings that they use on the floor in the store are awful and you don't realize how much you've been missing in picture quality until you calibrate. Do not rent this disc from Netflix as it does not come eith the color filters. You can buy a calibration disc at Amazon. I got the DVE one, from what I understand, the Spears and Munsel one is very good as well.

I don't believe that it is cost effective. BUT, if you have Comcast, you will now need a cable box to watch most channels now. I believe they stop at about channel 12 without the box. It's their way to stop cable thieves, but it's an inconvenience for the rest of us.

If this isn't the case, you might want to try to contact Vizio tech support www.vizio.com. or try to reset the TV - unplug the TV, press and hold the power button for 30 seconds, repeat. Plug it back in and see if it helped.

i,d suggest that the HD Channels are encrypted so that you cannot record them, Or That you don,t have The Correct leads setup. i.e hdmi Cable from TV To Player et,c.
