F a device is locking up and has a long noise or beep when powering down, this is due to hidden data being transferred to the microSD data card. These hidden files and folders are being created by the computer and sent to the data card in addition to the maps, waypoints, routes, tracks and pictures that were selected. The following GPS units could experience this issue.

  • eTrex Legend Cx
  • eTrex Legend HCx
  • eTrex Venture Cx
  • eTrex Vista Cx
  • eTrex Vista HCx
  • GPSMAP 60Cx
  • GPSMAP 60CSx
  • GPSMAP 76Cx
  • GPSMAP 76CSx
  • Rino 520HCx
  • Rino 530HCx
To prevent this issue when the device is shutting down delete these extra unused or hidden files and folders from the data card. Examples of these folders are: .Trashes and .Spotlight-V100 folders. Since the Mac OS adds hidden files and folders to mounted removable drive volumes this process cannot be done on a Mac and will need to be done after every time the data card is mounted as a volume on a Mac.
To delete these folders the device will have to be placed into USB Mass Storage mode. To do this:
  1. Connect the device to the computer using the USB cable
  2. Go to the Main Menu
  3. Select Setup
  4. Select Interface
  5. Select USB Mass Storage Mode
The device is now in USB Mass Storage Mode. At this time a window should open on the computer desktop displaying Removable Disk at the top. The Garmin folder will be displayed. Open the Garmin folder.
Do NOT delete the the following files:
  • gmapsupp.img
  • gmapsupp.unl
  • gmapsupp.gma
These files contain supplemental mapping. If delete will cause the mapping to be erased or unviewable.
If there are other folders or files on the data card, delete these. Some of these files or folders may be hidden and therefore will need to be unhidden*. Once you have done so, please disconnect the device from the computer and power it up.
*Note: To Display a file folder that is hidden:
  1. Select the Tools option on the window that appears on the computer when the device is in USB Mass Storage Mode
  2. Select Folder Options
  3. Select View
  4. Open the Files and Folders folder
  5. Open the Hidden Files and Folders folder
  6. Select Show hidden files and folder
  7. Select Apply
  8. Select OK
Once all of the hidden files and folders have been removed from the microSD Card the unit will not

There are a few instances in which you may want to perform a master reset on your Rino two-way radio, such as:

        not receiving a satellite signal

want to restore the factory default settings

        not functioning properly
    All settings, user data1,
and satellite data may be erased when resetting the GPS. User data can
be backed up to the computer, therefore refer to the FAQ article before performing the reset.

Press the PAGE, ENTER2, and POWER buttons simultaneously

Release on the buttons once the Do you really want to erase all user data? message appears

        Select Yes
    The
Rino is now reset. You will want to leave the device outside with a
clear view of the sky for a minimum of 20 minutes to acquire satellite
    data.
1User data consists of waypoints, routes, tracks, and geocaches
2Pressing the joystick in will be Enter

My Garmin 1450 locks up and will not compute a route, or show maps. It is about 3 weeks old and this it the first trip for it.

I experienced the same issue with a Garmin Dezl 560 - which is based on the Nuvi. After experimentation with various very long routes the Garmin started with sudden restarts, lockups and other weird behavior. It became unusable - which seemed like a programming error to me.

After a Master Reset - clearing all user data (POIs / Routes / Tracks) the Garmin acted normal again.

A master reset is triggered by holding the right bottom corner of the screen for at least 20 seconds while pressing the power button once. A question appears after some time to clear all user data.

Recently I've upgraded to a latest software version through MyGarmin.com - haven't seen this sudden lock-up / restart issue since.

My garmin shows a computer picture and doesn't switch on anymore!

Connect it with the USB cable to a PC / Mac - does it communicate with Mygarmin.com? If so look for a software update and load it. Make absolutely sure it's connected to external power - so the battery won't die when updating. Then wait for it to restart.

If no connection then hold the power button for more than 20 seconds - this triggers the auto reset.

If that doesn't help - let it sit like this till the battery has been drained. Then try to restart while charging it.

If still the same - let it drain again and while pressing the On button, hold the lower right corner of the screen for at least 20 seconds. This will trigger a master reset - reverting back to factory mode. It will erase all user data.

It won't turn on and even if i plug it into the computer or a ciagrette lighter nothing happens. it was working perfectly fine when i was using it and now i have absolutely nothing. it kept saying low...

Have you tried pressing and holding the power button for about 8 to 10 seconds? It should go on then off. Then wait a few seconds the turn it on normally. This usually resets the unit.
If this does not work try a hard reset.
Press and hold (and continue to hold) the bottom-right corner of the screen while powering the unit on.

Continue to hold the screen until the "Do you want to erase all user data?" prompt appears.

Press "yes" and the unit will reboot. This resets all your location settings and user preferences.

If possible after the hard reset, let the unit sit outdoors in the open for about 30 minutes or so to let the unit re-acquire the satellite data.

Once it gets going update your gps at the Garmin site.

I have Garmin Rino 530HCx, when I turn it on a strange screen comes on(software version, ESN, ......)iT THEN WILL NOT GO TO ANY OTHER SCREENS.It also will not turn off(have to remove battery to turn off)

It seems that the contact of your ENTER/ROCKER key are stuck. Try cycling the button a few times with a few gentle jerks. Or, if you are ready to take the risk, open up and clean the contact yourself.
