When the TomTom navigation software is bad (corrupted, error) an X is shown on the screen ...
You'll want to try to recover the software from your backup (that you have made on your computer).
Otherwise, you'll need to connect your device to the HOME (or MyDrive Connect) software (on your computer/laptop) to see if you can re-install the software.

Same here today. Had to replace all the files with those I copied and burnt to a backup CD when I first connected the ONE. If I try just a map update through Home (not an application update) then I get a "No Maps" message after startup. I'll bet dozens of perfectly good units are being replaced by retailers everywhere. I am now going to seek an explanation from TomTom. It may just be that the current updates are buggy or corrupted. At least I had the sense to back everything up before I tried to update the thing so I can quickly get going again. Spent about three hours so far faffing about with this "plug and play with yourself" little marvel. Bah!

Go to TOMTOM website and reinstall driver. If that doesn't work, try a different USB port.
