That's because you are using auto focus. That system needs light to actually focus. When it's lacking enough light it uses the build in flash to create enough contrast to focus the objective.
Solutions :
- change to manual focus (mf)
- mount a external flash: then a different method to focus is used
- use a small pocket lamp (the light it produces fades away in the flash)

this is a very mechanical machine that does require a good tech to see it every once in a while. the fluttering is most likely the fixing unit rollers. This machine if not used alot can flatten the fixing roller and cause a noise like you describe. Plus corona wires need changed when this happens to the quality. It not a DIY fix, sorry.

Olympus E510, Flash Flicker

If you are in a low lit area with the camera dial set to Auto the flash will do a strobing type of flash trying to help allow more light into the scene. This is called the AF illuminator function. To just go ahead and take the image, put the camera dial to P (program Auto) go to Menu - go to Wrench 1 tab - then right arrow over and then down arrow to AF Illum - right arrow and turn this function from On to Off and then take the image in the P mode setting. No flash flicker should occur.

Olympus E510

Make sure the camera is on and STORAGE is selected on the camera screen when connected to the computer. You will need to have STORAGE highlighted and select OK on the camera as this starts the camera and computer to communicate. Once communication established the LCD screen of the camera goes dark and the computer should generate a removable disk drive. Check the System Tray (lower right corner beside the PC time) for Safely Remove Hardware. When you click on it, it should read "Safely Remove USB Mass Storage Device Drive ?:" If you dont see that, then check the Device Manager to see if the camera is recognized as USB Mass Storage Device. The camera uses the driver usbstor.

Olympus FL36 flash unit

Hey I have an E510 and an fl 36 flash unit and no problems for a year now.
And no problems at all {knock wood]!
Have you checked to see if all the flash pins are making contact?
Normally I only turn my flash on after I put it on the camera and then turn the camera off and then on again to see if everything is ok. I remember the flash would not communicate with the camera on a shoot and after a while I realized that the flash was not all the way in the hot shoe. Fool around with the flash off the camera first and see. The flash have modes that you have to set up if the mode is set in full manual that might be a problem. There is a button that you have to hold down for three seconds to get in the menu, Get hold of your manual or download one My buttons are fine and have not faded any at all. I realize that the power button an the flash is hard to press on, I do hope I was of help .GOOD LUCK
