Our 2005 Montana SV6 developed severe engnine knock, with dramatic loss of power, no prior problems that may have lead to this. Our mechanic thinks the oil pump was beginning to fail, and that maybe only the top end of the engine was damaged. Any comments? Any similar stories?

Is the knock a thudding noise similar to someone pounding on a metal door or is it more of a rattling or chattering noise? If it is the thudding noise there is likely lower end engine damage. If is the chattering or rattling noise it may just be lack of oil to the upper end or head/s of the engine. How far have you driven it like this? If not very far it may have minimal damage that can be repaired by just installing a new oil pump, but if driven over a few miles like this it could be excessive and need new parts+repairs. The oil pump may not be easily changed but extra repairs are definitely going to cost more.

The fuel ilter is under the van under the drivers side floor board mounted to the inside of the frame rail. You can replace it with basic mechanic skills.

2005 Pontiac SV6 Montana key fob unlocks doors but will not lock

For the sliding doors you need to clean the contacts, there are 6 or 8 on both sides, just wipe them clean as they are probably covered in oil/grease/grime.
