Western Digital 250GB MyBook External USB 2.0 250 GB Hard Drive Logo
Posted on Sep 15, 2011

I have the Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 250GB External Hard Drive. I have moved and lost the power cord. I purchased the DYNEX 500ma Universal AC Adapter as a replacement. When I plug the device in to the computer, nothing happens. The computer doesn't recognize that I have plugged it in. The green light on the front of the drive is on but nothing happens.

I don't have a photo of the AC adapter, but if you look on it the Voltage and Amperage specifications are;

Input: 100-240VAC / 50~60Hz
Output: 12VDC / 2A

This means the Input power can be from 100 volts to 240 Volts AC, and at 50 to 60 Hertz

The Output power is 12 Volts DC at no more than 2 Amp's. (Amperes)

Asian Power Devices Inc. has a model DA-24B12 that fits these specs.
Also a Wattac AC adapter model number - BAO362Zl-8-A01 will work.

Otherwise just use a 12 Volt, 2 Amp power pack, with a positive on center contact, and a 2mm pin hole

You need to go into the BIOS of your computer and change the boot order of your computer.  Your computer must be set to boot from your main hard drive only.

SOURCE: i haveProblems with Western Digital My Book

You would more than likely have to send it in and get it serviced. Or if you can find out if it is just the USB 2.0 cable, then just replace the cable.

WHAT IS THE INPUT VOLTAGE AND AMPS OF A 500 GB WD EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE. I LOST MY ADAPTER

You can normally buy a replacement adapter from Western Digital from this link, but they are out of stock at the moment.

As an alternative place to purchase this, it looks like you can buy it on Amazon.com

My Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 500 GB hard drive was working fine, until the power cord was removed accidentally. Now I can't get any computer to recognize the drive when I plug it in the USB...

Is the power light on, if not replace the power supply.
I f you have light then your hard drive is shot or the circuit inside the box is fried.
If it is out of warranty and you have another Western Digital Sata drive handy you can swap it with the one inside to see if the drive is bad.
Good luck.

WD Book external hard drive

You can probably reconnect just by unplugging and replugging the drive (either the USB or the power cable)

failing that, rebooting the computer often works
