What is the proper way to shut it off?

You need to let the projector cool down after turning it off before you turn it back on again. Wait 10 minutes, then it should turn on ok.

Projector shut down

happened to me something similar to what reported, only the small fan sometimes went off within minutes and sometimes seemed to work for hours
The room temperature was around 20 degrees, so the problem was software or hardware, but on the internet I did not find other people with this problem or fix
I did not update the firmware for the loss of the warranty, which I am thinking of claim

Our HC 6800 projector will work for about 10-20 minutes before displaying a solid red screen and shutting off.

Projectors shut off when they overheat. They overheat when air does not move through the projector cooling it. This happens when the fans are not working or air filters/vents are not working.
Check to see whether the fans are working. If they are working, open the top cover and see whether air filters/vents are covered with dust. If so clean them.
Good luck!

InFocus LP725 light goes out after 10 minutes

The Projector will turn off after so many hours of running the same bulb module. The counter will turn on a replace bulb LED. Installing the new bulb module should reset the counter and turn off the LED.

Check the projector’s lamp to ensure that it is securely connected
in the lamp module. Make sure by removing it and reinserting it.

Check the cables for problems.

When testing, power up in this order. Projector, Computer monitor, Computer.

A minor power surge may cause the lamp to shut off. Turn the
projector off, wait at least 30 seconds, then turn it back on.

I hope these suggestions help

I'm having the same problem. My Model is PB8253. Projector started, then afer a couple minutes it goes off with the red lamp led flashing.
Just replaced the lamp, but the problem persists. Tried to remove all connecting cables, except for the power, but still the same problem.

Toshiba TDP S8 projector shuts down suddenly

The reason why the projector is shutting off is so the lamp doesn't explode. It's more of a safety feature on the projector, you can reset the lamp and it might work for another 500hours. If the picture is still pretty bright I can get you the reset procedure, but be warn that when the lamp does eventually blow it could shatter the glass inside, so be careful, it shouldn't hurt the unit.
