A co worker gave me his laptop. I called to get dial up service (all there is in my area) and was told there is no modem connected. Also my mouse will not plug into the computer. Could there be something wrong with the connector on the computer because I have tried 3 different mice.

WOW dv9000z and no OS stated is this obsolete XP or VISTA?
11 years old, lets count those years, my guess vista.

posting with no OS stated, makes answers, impossible or dead wrong. (click cp +system bingo?) in control panel.

hardware, no photos posted by you ? so>>>??
my guess is you tried to plug in a 20 year old PS2 mouse to a USB port, or the reverse> sure. that is it. wrong mouse. easy no?
easy peasy japaneesy.
left side read jack looks like PS2 jack is not its S-Video
use USB mouse .

now buy a modem and plug it in,

your PC many have modem inside, did you look or RTM read the manual for it first. ?
im reading the manual to you , now, RTM
it says, on page11 onboard modem.
but will not run at all unless the vista modem driver is loaded.
this is a fact if Vista and a fact if XP and its XP driver.
so onces that is loaded that driver, you use the Microsoft dialer to dial up the , service providers phone number ,omg land lines, not seen a LL in years,.
Getting Dial up working is not easy.
1: hp ended support on 11 year old PC.
2: MS ended support on XP and VISTA.
3: The HP support disks for this PC ended long ago.
finding modem drivers that work and are not virus infected will be problematic, sorry.

the modem jack is on page 11 item 6 , RJ11 to your land line jack on the wall.

New computers rarely have modems built in, you can tell by the existence of a RJ-11 (2 conductor) jack on the side or back to plug your phone line in. And also right click computer then properties then device manager. Then look for a modem under Network...
If you have a serial port, an older external modem might do the trick, But likely you have only USB ports and are chasing more trouble to go from USB to Serial to Modem.
A USB modem is probably expensive as well.

For the mouse, look at a second hand store for a USB mouse or borrow one and try that.

SOURCE: I have a hp compaq nx7400 laptop with an agere

The Agere systems HDA modem is a 56kbps modem typically found on laptops. View it in device manager.

Start->Control Panel->System->Device Manager->Modems

Should be listed there. See if there is an exclamation mark next to it.

Not very expensive or difficult to replace

I got a dell x51 pda it has a ambicom 56k modem card...how do I use the card to connection the internet?

You need to configure "Dial-Up Networking", and you need to find an Internet Service Provider in your "local" telephone-calling area that still offers "dial-up" service, and sign-up with them.
They can provide instructions on how to configure dial-up networking to their setup.

Can't set up dial-up connection

Restart the computer.
Enter BIOS setup.
Click to "disable" both the COM1 and COM2 (or Serial1 and Serial 2) ports.
Save-and-exit from BIOS setup.
Restart Windows.
The modem should now be assigned as 'COM1', and should work.

Dial up access

You need to contact an Internet Service Provider in your area who provides a dial up service. You will also need a dial up 56k modem.
The ISP can supply the setup information and maybe able to supply the modem if your computer does not have a built-in modem.

Dial up Modem

Dial up modems have 2 phone line connections side by side in the back of a desktop, one is for the wall, other is for your telephone. Laptops have just one phone line connector. Look closely at the little symbols by the connection holes. If you don't have one, Modems (internal or externally mounted), are on eBay, buy a 56K with drivers on disk for your operating system. A few modems can be installed using Windows default drivers (drivers are software operating programs that tell your computer how to regulate and operate a device).

Telephone

Is this EVERY time? If its a land line, depending on where you live and who the phone co. is , the prob may be in the phone co. central office (CO) switch which is where your dial tone comes from. Its the place where all dial tone is generated for your area generally a 5 - 10 mile radious. Outside of that radious is another CO and so on & so on. well sometimes depending on the type of switch the CO is using it can get bogged down with too many people making calls at one time. and that message will come up until less callers are on at 1 time. Your cordless phone or any phone you have can never make that message happen. I am a technician for the phone co. in my area for the past 11 years so I have a little knowledge on the subject. Sometime phone company customer service reps will tell you anything to get you off the the phone just to make their call quota look good. eventually you'll get someone who cares about your issue and will get a tech out there to help you. hope this helps.

Wizard wont create a dialup connection using vista i have updated the modem drivers and the modem is in my device manager

Hi
Follow these instructions to create a dial-up connection on your computer. Then you can get on the Internet to receive/send email and browse the web.

From the Start menu, click on Connect To
Click on Set up a connection or network
Click Set up a dial-up connection
Click Next. Enter the required information for the connection:
Dial-up phone number: 513-520-1135
User Name: (the NCF accountID that was assigned to you)
Password: (the password chosen by you when you registered)
Remember this password(check this box)
Connection Name:NCF Internet - Libertel
Allow other people to see this connection: Check this if you want this connection for all users on your computer (recommended)
Note: if you have Call Waiting, temporarily disable it for the duration of your NCF connection byusing *70,,613-520-1135 as the phone number.
*The NCF dialup phone number is in area code 613 in Ottawa. Please note that long distance charges may apply to modems outside of your local calling area.

Click Connect to create and save this connection.
You have successfully created a Dial-up Connection in Windows Vista.

To connect to the NCF using the connection you have now created, follow these steps:
  1. Click on Start, and then Connect To.
  2. Left click on the NCF Internet - Libertel dialup-up connection and select Connect at the bottom.
  3. The Dial-up windows will come up. Simply click on Dial and your computer will connect to the NCF

Modem in use

Try the following:

-Open the Control Panel
-Open System
-Click on Device Manager
-Click on Modems
-Highlight and right click on the listed modem
-Select Uninstall

Close out anything open and Restart.

IF (!) Windows is cooperating, it should 'find a new device' and reinstall the Winmodem (it's only software and a little telephone line matching).

If Windows fails to recognize the 'new device,' you will have to manually reinstall it via the 'add new hardware' path in the Control Panel.

As with any Windows stuff - rotsa ruck!
