Type of water heater is not known.
Gas or electric, tank or tankless?

1) Tank: With tank-type gas and electric heaters, turn up thermostat on heater, and keep sediment out of tank by flushing each 6 months.

http://waterheatertimer.org/Clean-sediment-out-of-water-heater.html
I do not recommend tankless for the budget conscious consumer, because of cost and potential problems.Tankless water heaters have risk of failure when water heater temperature is increased.
Tankless require continual maintenance, and are expensive to repair.

2) Tank: Install larger tank-type water heater with more gallons of storage. Plan ahead before purchase and get coupons that apply to purchase.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-install-gas-water-heater.html
See size chart:
http://waterheatertimer.org/images/Small-water-heater.jpg
Tankless: Larger capacity tankless unit will consume a lot of fuel and might require larger gas line, and increased water flow, etc.

3) Tank-type water heater: Insulate tank, install heat trap pipes, wrap pipes with insulation, install tempering tank, install low-flow shower heads, use shower timer, fix water leaks, keep tank free of sediment, use single-handle faucet correctly, check anode rod, check for leaks on regular basis etc
http://waterheatertimer.org/9-ways-to-save-with-water-heater.html

4) Take showers instead of baths.
Shower uses 5-9 gallons hot water. Bath 12-15 gallons hot water.

5) Tank-type: Install tank-type water heater with higher recovery rating, and larger first-hour delivery.
Typical electric water heater heats 21 gallons per hour. Typical gas 41 gallons per hour.
High recovery gas can produce 80-100 gallons per hour.
These units consume more fuel per hour of operation, and are generally more expensive up front, and will require larger gas line.
Buy at local plumbing supply.

6) Electric tank-type: add additional 240Volt electric line to water heater and wire elements for simultaneous operation. Add a comment with details about your electrical questions if you want to do this. Hot water delivery capacity of regular tank can be increased 15%-30%, from 21 gallons per hour to 25+ gallons per hour.

Large water heater, turn p the themo stat to a higher setting ( watch for burns with young childern and older folks)

or the best install a tempering valve. this valve mixs hot water with cold water before it goes into the building.

Again if you have young ones or old people they can burn faster than any other group.the best is a larger heater for the DIY person.

Thanks Tom

Is it safe to turn up your water heater as high as it can go?

It is generally not recommended to set your water heater to the highest setting. Water heaters typically have a maximum temperature setting, usually between 120Ā°F and 140Ā°F, and setting the temperature higher than this can be dangerous.
Water that is too hot can cause scalding and skin burns, and can also damage pipes and fixtures. Additionally, high temperatures can cause increased wear and tear on the water heater, reducing its lifespan and potentially leading to costly repairs.
If you're running out of hot water, there are a few other things you can try before turning up the temperature. For example, you could insulate the hot water pipes to reduce heat loss, or upgrade to a larger water heater if your current one is too small for your needs. If you do decide to increase the temperature, be sure to do so gradually and monitor the water temperature to ensure it doesn't get too hot.

Emergency water supply

When a storm hits or other things go wrong we need water. We can go for two to thee weeks with no food, But at best we can only go three days with out water.Your water heater is a stores 40, 50 60 gallons of water. for a family of 4 that could last you 10 days with some left over. Its your life and family proteect them.
What you need to do. First make sure you have to good working valves on your water heater one on the hot side and one on the cold side. You need to flush out your tank every year. Then let's say a hurricane is heading right for you. All you need to do is close off both the hot and cold water valves. Have a 4 foot section of hose that you cleaned before the storm. Now you need to get water.
Hook up your hose to the drain on the heater, OPEN the relief valve to let air in. Open the drain valve get the water you need and close both valves. Clean water you can drink right away. Save your family fire, shelter, water this first things we need to live

How do you increase the water temp?

Hi Donna:
The temperature is pre-set and is intended to be not too hot to inadvertently burn someone. Increasing the setting can cause a real SAFETY HAZARD, especially if small children or seniors are involved.
With that in mind, there will be a panel that unscrews from the side of the heater. After removing it, lift the insulation back and a dial should be visible. There will be numbers, and a pointer with a screw slot in the centre. Turning the pointer to a higher number will increase the temperature.
If you are going to adjust it, only do so a very small amount at one time, until you reach the desired temperature.
Remember, increasing the temperature will not give you more hot water, it will only give you hotter water. If you need more hot water, consider getting a larger tank or an "on demand" gas fired unit.
STAY SAFE!

Hot water recover time

No.
Fold-back elements are low-watt-density, so element does not burn out as easily since heating is spread across more surface area. But recovery remains 16 gallon per hour.
20 amp breaker and 12 gauge wire: max 3800 watts
30 amp breaker and 10 gauge wire: max 5800 watt.
4500 watt element heats 20 gallons per hour.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-water-heater-element.html
http://waterheatertimer.org/Increase-amount-of-hot-water.html
Instead of changing elements: Set thermostats higher so more cold is added to hot water, and then you have more hot water available inside tank.

What sort of lpm rate would suit a normal home with fairly good water pressure

This is just what I would say for an average family of four during hours of peak usage. You should be okay with a flow rate of twenty to twenty four lpm, assuming you have rapid enough recovery. This is based on one shower at a time and not running dishwasher or clothes washer at the same time.If you are using hot water from multiple fixtures then increase accordingly.Hope this helps. Thanks

No instant hot water

If you have a tankless hot water heater, you may still need to install an expansion air chamber to stop the "water hammer"; If you have a tanked hot water heater, you will never get instant hot water like with a tankless unit.
