I'm having a problem with my HP "1020 Series" Fax machine. When it's recieving a fax, "Recieving P1" appears on the display for about 10 seconds. The display will then GO BLANK, the fax will not print and finally... the machine will "lock up" and not accept input from any buttons that are pressed. I am now stuck with a fax machine with a BLANK DISPLAY that appears dead. What's the propblem and how do I correct it? Please help... Thanks!

I do not know about this machine but one of the most noted problems for machines is software and firmware updates needed to keep them up to date with computer systems they connect to.
A visit to HP to download its latest software may well help you in this case, start with the drivers which can cause untold issues if outdated.

Hope it helps.......

From previous experience it is a compatability problem stemming from propritary transmission modes. Not sure what model Lanier fax is but they can disable some optional transmission modes first. Otherwise if this person is important you can tell that person to force transmit to you at 9600bps.

SOURCE: canon fax 2060P not recieving faxes

It seems that the protocol is failing. Just check, by printing a receive report. If there are errors it is after the check frame. If no errors, it is failing before the check frame. In either case, 1st aid is to listen using a handset for noise or static on the line. If the line is clear, then you will have to call service to change the tx/rx attenuation.

SOURCE: sending a fax

First make sure that the fax button has been pushed and is llit...

The 2820 should have a handset. In order to use manual transmission (when you get to hear all the beeps and whistles) you will need to load the document then pick up the handset. then dial the number, when you hear the recieving fax tone then hit the start button.

The 2820 should also have a hook hold button pressing this will allow you to hear the dial tone and the numbers you dial along with the receiving fax tone. If you dont hear anything when you press this button then you may want to use the volume buttons to increase the volume.

Also remember that if you have not picked up the handset or pressed he hook/hold button the unit will use automatic mode, which is to say that all you will do is load the document, dial the number, and then press the start button.

SOURCE: HP 640 Fax series not printing

If it is a color printer, try printing just grayscale or black& white.  It is is already set to print just b/w, try printing in color.  Basically you may be out of ink.  Run the printer utility to clean the heads and see if anything changes.  A new set of cartridges should fix the problem, I believe.
Hope this helps...

Same problem

press the setup button and scroll down to tools.
in tools there should be an option that says run fax test.
that would give you a printed page as to which part of the hardware of the printer or the fax line failed.

What your error code means is(look below)

Definition

There is too much noise on the line for a valid connection between two fax machines to complete. The noise problem might go away over time.

Solution

Retry the fax reception at a different time when telephone line conditions have improved. Call the telephone provider if line conditions fail to improve.
