Black smoke means the vehicle is running really rich , do you know what that means ?
lacks power when accelerating could be plugged catalytic converter . Fouled spark plugs . Leaking , fuel injectors , fuel pressure regulator leaking .Air filter clogged .Hooking up a scan tool an checking fuel trims , seeing if the computer is taking fuel away or adding .Seeing what the computer is seeing
Why black smoke coming from my car engine Troubleshooting 1 Must Watch
thake out the plug and pull the cord a few times that should clear any oil on the head clean plug and try again if the mower is old the piston rings are either worn or broken allowing oil to get into the fuel .
Black smoke would indicate it is burning oil, Has the machine been working on an incline.? check valve clearences. My guess is that oil is somehow getting into the cylinder.
well if it runs the carb is okay the smoke is just changes in how the carb loads up most of the time unless its not smoking all the time.and most mowers leak from around the dip stick or the crankshaft seals.hope this helps would be curious as to where the oil is coming from.good luck
Continuous or just for the 5-10 seconds.
If continuous you may have oil seeping past your pistons oil rings or valve guides oil seals.
Check your spark plug see if they are fouled badly (covered heavily and oily) or just covered by oil and sooth lightly.
If 5-10 sec it is normal as the engine is heating up there are normally a little oil seeping past the seals.
Normally black smoke indicates too much gas or too much choke. Remove and clean or replace the spark plug because it is probably fouled. Change the air filter because it is probably clogged. I am not sure how mechanically inclined you are, so if you are then it needs a tune-up. If you are not then I would take it in for a tune-up(needle valve replacement or cleaning and adjustments, float bowl cleaning, and spark plug replacement.
the carb is located under the aircleaner it sounds like the mower is being fan at full throttle this on some mowers applies the choke try ajusting the throttle to full then slightly back to open choke.
I had the same problem with my YTH1848XPT . Believe it or not it is simply a dirty air filter....you must remove the filter and blow it out with an air compressor...or better yet replace it. you can not clean it well enough without the force of the air compressor. Mine works great now.
