VS-6051 fuzzy picture

Our VS-6051 doesn't give a sharp picture, everything has red and blue fringes as though the 3 images don't quite register. I want to make them register. None of the external adjustments cured this. I took the front off and played with a little panel of three knurled knobs which seem to adjust the individual images, but that didn't fix it either. Any other ideas?

Those three Knobs were the focus or screen controls . your problem may be dust and dirt on the lens or the tubes could be getting soft. It could also be a convergence trouble and thats very common in these sets . a picture would be nice see where your problem lies BUT let me warm you down there where you were plying and turning those little knobs is about 32000 volts!!did you know this ? A tv set is not something to experiment with as it could kill ya. Unless you have technical background in electronics I would call a servicer to assist you. Good Luck

I have some picture distortion - pink fuzzy color where white should be (like on hockey ice). I'm trying to determine if the t-con board is to blame and if I might fix it easily

Hi Bill.

I don't see a specific model for your TV, but have owned a rear projector system before. There is usually a sub-menu where you can do fine alignment of the Red, Green, and Blue projectors to get rid of the pink fringe. There is generally a white crosshair at center screen where you can fine align the three colors to get rid of the fringing, and sometimes an advanced menu where there are crosses all over the screen that you can individually select and fine tune, (tweaking the different optical distortions of the individual projectors to overlap).

If the fringe is a big swath instead of a fine edge, or if a color is totally gone, then you may be talking power amp issues. For fine fringes, the adjustments usually work fine.

Hoping that helps!

I thought i might need a lamp for my mitsubishi tv--model VS 60607 when my tv is fuzzy when turned on.should i simply replace the lamp or is there something else i should try? thank you!

This TV is a rear projection television and does not have a lamp. It has three CRT color guns (Red, Blue, and Green). You have a convergence issue (the red, blue and green color guns aren't aligned properly) and it doesn't sound like a very big one. You should be able to adjust this through the CONVERGENCE Menu in ADVANCED SETTINGS.
More details can be found in your manual, here. The model number isn't exactly the same but I'm sure the process is identical or really close. The other option would be a bad IC (integrated circuit) for the convergence control. This is unlikely unless your picture looks something like this: captainhawk1_15.jpg

Double images and colors are blurry .Blue, red and yellow wave coming up from the bottom of the screen on the lower left and fuzzy images this is a symptom is for busted convergence IC,you must replaced this IC in order that will works better again.STK 392-xxx ICs and it's associated resistor, this resistor automatically change value, can caused trouble even though you change the ICs.If you bring this to a service center they cost you $600 to $700,but if you buy the repair kit you can save more, don't wory it is very easy because there is installation guide including in the repair kit. I have a Philips 51PW9303 Rear Projection TV that had blue shadows around the sides of the screen and now has a green and red bowed line at bottom. Does I need a convergence board to solve this?

If the following doesn't work the tubes could be at the end of life:
Adjusting convergence:
Note: For best results, the Projection TV needs to be turned on for 15 minutes or longer before adjusting the picture tubes (convergence).

To adjust the convergence of the picture tubes:
  1. Press the 'MENU/SELECT' button on the remote.
  2. Press CURSOR RIGHT to enter the PICTURE menu.
  3. Use CURSOR DOWN and RIGHT to select and enter MANUAL CONVERGE.
  4. Press CURSOR RIGHT to select CONVERGE RED or press CURSOR RIGHT and DOWN to select CONVERGE BLUE.
  5. A crosshair will be shown on the screen. If there is any red or blue fringe around the crosshair, use CURSOR RIGHT, LEFT, UP, DOWN to try and merge the fringe colors with the crosshair.
  6. Press the 'MENU/SELECT' button to return to MANUAL CONVERGE menu.
  7. Press the 'EXIT' button to exit the menu.
If you are satisfied with the convergence you may stop now. Otherwise, you can continue and adjust the convergence more using mult ipoint convergence.
To Adjust multipoint convergence:
  1. Press the 'MENU/SELECT' button on the remote.
  2. Use CURSOR RIGHT to enter the PICTURE menu.
  3. Use CURSOR DOWN and RIGHT on the cursor ring to select and enter MANUAL CONVERGE.
  4. Press CURSOR RIGHT and DOWN on the cursor ring to select MULTIPOINT RED or MULTIPOINT BLUE.
  5. A grid of crosshairs will appear on the screen. If there is any red or blue fringe around any of them, press CURSOR RIGHT to enter NAVIGATE mode.
  6. Use CURSOR RIGHT, LEFT, UP, and DOWN to move to a crosshair that has a color outline.
  7. Press the 'EXIT' button to enter ADJUST mode.
  8. Use CURSOR RIGHT, LEFT, UP, and DOWN to merge the color with the crosshair.
  9. Press the 'STATUS/EXIT' button to return to NAVIGATE mode. Repeat as necessary.
  10. Press the 'MENU' button to return to the MANUAL CONVERGE menu.
  11. Press CURSOR DOWN until SAVE MULTIPOINT is selected.
  12. Press CURSOR RIGHT to save the multipoint settings.
  13. Press the 'EXIT' button to exit the menu.

AKAI PT5598HD - I HAVE REPLACED THE CONVERGENCE BOARD AND PICTURE AND SOUND ARE "ON" BUT "PERFECT FOCUS" WILL NOT BRING BLUE INTO FOCUS. "PF" STOPS AT 37% - RED AND GREEN PATTERS ARE SHARP BUT BLUE IS...

Most of these sets have a SCREEN/FOCUS block---usually all black with 6 controls----you need to look close at it as one row of 3 will be screen controls---don't touch those----the other 3 will be FOCUS- MARKED in little letters will be r,g,b(red, green blue). TWO ways to adjust the focus: 1. carefully locate the blue focus control and adjust to see if blue will improve in focus. 2. each of the 3 large lens where the picture comes out have a wing nut and a slot--you can loosen the nut and turn the lens---usually best focus that way is if the part that turns is in the middle of the available area to move it.

I should point out that all projection sets intentionally de focus the blue--the lines if blue should be clear but never as perfect as green or red--this is normal.

I do this here for free so if this has been helpful give me a vote here.

Fuzzy picture

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become  cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

Mitsubishi VS 4552A

One of your convergence IC's has either cracked loose or burned out. The IC will have to be resoldered or replaced and then the convergence circuits realigned. If you do not have experience in repairing convergence circuits then have a qualified tech handle it for you. This is by far the most common failure in the projection sets and a good tech can have it fixed in about an hour and a half. I charge $150 for that but shops in your area will vary, so call around.
