I have a motoroloi833 from boost mobile I am trying to unlock for use with ATT. It is asking for an 8 digit special code

You can try unlocking your phone through codes. its the safe way to unlock your phone. because when you unlock your phone through software or hardware there are possibilities for data getting corrupted or lost. but there is no such possibilities when you unlock through codes. thats y i prefer this method to unlock my phone. i got the codes from this site Superunlockcodes.com to unlock my phone.

    I have tried this but the carrier is Boost Mobile and that is not an option in the network providers. Are they known as any other carrier?

When you place a new or a existing SIM card from another phone provider into your mobile phone and it asks for a Security Code then :-
This phone is locked to the original mobile phone provider. You need to contact this mobile provider to ask for the unlock code (Security Code) for this phone. You need to provide proof of ownership etc and the phone's unique IMEI number which is located inside the phone under the battery. They use this number to generate the unlock code for your phone.
They should provide you with instructions on how to enter this code into the phone.
Once you unlock the phone, then you can insert a new SIM card in this phone or sign up with another phone provider using this phone.
You could ring the phone provider and ask for the unlock Security Code because you are going overseas and wish to use your phone with a prepaid SIM card from another country. This maybe a free service.
The other way to get your phone unlock is to use a phone unlocking company on the Internet, they usually charge a couple of Dollars for their services. Use Google and search for "Security unlocking code” companies in your area.

You can also get the IMEI number by entering this on your phone

boost mobile doesn't work with att even if its unlocked. It will only work with Tmobile if unlocked.

Unlock code for motorola i415
you cannot use a GSM sim card in a nextel / boost mobile phone, if you need it unlocked for iden service you can go here.

My Motorola i415 is locked !
There is no actual "Special Code". The phone is programmed for one, but it won't work. If you can get to a Sprint Nextel repair center, ask them to use RSS to unlock the codeplug. Also note that many Nextel SIM cards will do this to a Boost phone.

The phone is locked to your carrier. An unlock code must be entered to use the SIM of another carrier in the phone. Check with boost for an unlock code. There are also tons of unlock calculatrs out there, but be careful ... if the wrong code isentered too many times the phone will be permanently locked to boost.
