The compressor windings shorting out are usually what trips the breaker. Someone will need to test the windings and if they are defective it will be best to replace the fridge

Why not remove the ground fault circuit interruptor (GFCI)? Condensed moisture in the fridge evaporator area, along with defrost circuit and other electrical may be the cause of the ground fault.

Without drawing a diagram, and assuming you have the controller, you need to do two things: Power the controller by finding a wire pair in the fridge that is always hot, and finding the wire that the resident thermostat uses to interrupt the operation of the compressor. This thermostat is usually located behind a panel in the top part of the refrigerator section and has a bulb that resides in the freezer. . Your controller should have an on and off range; that is, it should cut the fridge on at, say 61, and cut back off at, say, 60. You'll need some kind of range, thereby giving the compressor some "off time" of more than a couple of minutes. If you don't do this, you will reck the compressor, or it simply won't start. (Refrigeration systems need to equalize so that the compressor motor won't have to start when the pressure is really high. At equal pressure between evaporator and condensor, the motor can start easily.) . You have quite a project ahead of you. I suggest when you get into the nitty gritty of it, enlist your neighborhood MacGyver type. It shouldn't be that hard to pull off this project.

It won't be the defrost timer, unusual, it will be the defrost element inside the freezer section behind the back panel or a shorted defrost klixon.
