Dell 2000FP monitor black screen

I just got a used Dell 2000FP. It worked pretty well for a few days but now it works only intermittently. The power button stopped working. Now I have to turn it on by plugging it in. Then all the lights on the front come on and stay on and the power button light is both orange and green at the same time. Pressing the power button or any other buttons has no effect. The DEll logo appears on the screen but the monitor usually won't accept a signal from my laptop. My suspicion is that the firmware needs to be reloaded. Is that possible? Sometimes I plug it in and it just works, but that is increasingly rare. Thanks. -Loren

My Dell 2000FP is doing the same exact thing. I would be glad for any ideas or solutions. I have tried it on a few different computers. Worked fine a few days ago. then it started doing this.

hi!!!! did you repair your monitor? how???? one friend give one and it works exactly like you explain!!!!

  • Anonymous Feb 07, 2009

Same problem here. Last week, the monitor freezed after some minutes but kept working until I changed screen resolution (as long as the adjusting to the current resolution was finished at the time of freezing). Now it freezes during startup procedures.

I just fixed my Dell 2000FP LCD monitor and right now using it.

The solution is very simple and easy. Do it your self if you are comfortable soldering.

Resolder the 2 transformer legs ( 9 legs each transformer), 2 oranger capitors, 2 small green capitors, 2 inductors coil legs.

Use at least 45 watts soldering iron with a pointed tip. Be careful.

This problem is, without a doubt, caused by the firmware inside the atmel chip (AT49BV8192AT) that is located on the main logic board. My 2000FP had the sam problems, It just freezes during startup and only a hard reset could solve the problem. I also tried capacitors and re-soldering stuff then it seems to help but this is not the case because the problem is in the beginning intermittend. After a while it freezed all the tim during startup. It is the firmware that is slowly getting erased. I ordered a new atmel chip with pre-installed 2000FP software and used a Hot air gun the repace it. The monitor has been working for half a year now. This is a typical DELL 2000FP problem from a certain series.

Good luck repairing.

Smokkeltje, how did you acquire the atmel chip with pre-installed 2000FP firmware?

The main logic board has gone bad and requires physical repair, take a look at http://www.lcdrepair.us/2000inverter.html

(it's not firmware or the power supply)

My monitor died slowly, the time to the freeze constantly degrading. No difference if the device was warm or cold. This leads to the following hypothesis:

Microprocessors freeze up because of three reasons most times: First, temperature problems. Unlikely here. Second, programme runs into an infinite loop because of poor code. Unlikely, too. Third, the supply voltage is not as stable as it should.

So it is most likely a problem of the power supply. Since the external power supply is fine the problem will be the internal DC/DC converters providing the 2.7V for the logics chip. Their maximum current output is heavily dependent on the condition of the electrolytic capacitors involved. And these tend to run dry over years, especially when stored in hot places (and a running monitor might be such a place).

If I am right you need to find the degraded capacitor(s) and exchange it with a new one, SMD, Low-ESR, 105°C temperature rating, capacity and maximum voltage as printed on the case (first number is capacity in µF, second is maximum voltage). Process involves SMD soldering, so practice soldering and dissoldering on a cheaper board first, not the no-longer-produced 4-layer one.

I will try this myself once I have some spare time (have to finish my diploma thesis first).

My monitor is a dell 2000 flat screen 20.1" turns

This is a backlight problem. The picture is there but there is no light from behind the LCD screen. It could be due to faulty capacitors, which are easy to replace. It could be a faulty Inverter transformer, which is harder to fix but he backlight controller board can usually be replaced at a reasonable price. If you have soldering experience you may be able to replace the faulty capacitors - look for capacitors with bulging tops.
Repalcing the inverter board in a job for someone with electronics experience. You can buy a universal inverter board for about £15 to £20 from e-bay.
20 inch monitors can be bought for about £100 to £150 so you need to decide whether it is economical to repair.

My monitor is a dell 2000 flat screen 20.1" turns

It is not so difficult to repare if you have scills to open the monitor and scills in un-soldering/soldering electronic components, than yes it is worth it, but if you go to a shop they have a tendency to sell you another monitor since the price they charge to repare the powersupply is about the same as a new monitor

I have Dell 2000sp monitor that was working fine. The none of my internet pages would load. I thought it was my connection and restarted the computer, but now the monitor is on, but the screen is black....

The only problem if it is the monitor that it could have is the connection. Check see if you cable is kinked coming out of the computer, and is conected properly. Usually everything else would be a problem with the computer.
You can also try hitting the buttons on the monitor to see if stuck.

My monitor screen goes black

The monitor is going bad. Either going to be a bad screen or a bad inverter. Also Since you tried it on another computer and its still giving you the same symptoms, you know the computers are fine. To be sure, try another monitor on your computer and if you get video on the new monitor then thats another way of verifying that the dell monitor is bad.
