Does anyone know how to print using this printer when the color cartridges have run out of ink? I am getting a message on the LCD that says the ink is low and to replace the ink cartridges. The black ink is brand new and I should be able to print in black only. The message doesn't go away even if I remove the empty ink cartridges. Since this is an "All In One" it is even preventing me from using the scanner. Would they really make a printer that forces you to buy more ink (about $80) before you could scan anything. Any help would be great.
Are ya sure it isn't only preventing scanning direct to printer output? Is it also disallowing scanning to file? Epson printers can´t operate if one of the cartridges is empty. There is no workaround for that. Epson printers actually use a LITTLE ink from ALL the color carts, even when you select "black only" in the driver. They do this to help keep the nozzles from clogging in the case of users who mostly print in black. Nobody [besides perhaps Epson] ever claimed Epson printers were the most efficient or environmentally-friendly ones in the world. for quite a while now Epson uses piezoelectric printheads, as opposed to the thermal heads used on most other printers. The enemy of piezo heads is air bubbles. They candamage the costly head, and that's why you cannot continue to use the printer if ANY individual cartridge runs out of ink. In fact, Epson designed its cartridges to signal "empty" when there's still around 15% (higher by some estimates) ink left! That's to make certain you can't run the cart completely dry and thereby introduce air into the head. If you don't believe that, carefully open up a spent cartridge over a sink, slice open the plastic film covering the various ink channels and rinse it out -- repeatedly push in the spring loaded outlet valve as well. There's so much ink left, it will take quite a while before the water begins to clear! It's incredibly wasteful and annoying, but it actually saves money in the long run, because it's even MORE wasteful to run tons of cleaning cycles just to purge the head once you've gotten air in the system. Aftermarket carts and ink can save lots of money, but they're a crap shoot. Fed up with OEM price gouging and scare tactics, I decided to try a clear-cartridge refill kit for my R200. The RX600 uses the same kit: http://www.inkjetcarts.us/servlet/Detail?no=8 Good Luck!
Never buying an epson again.
This is absolutely ludicrous. It has just happened to me. I had a Lexmark before and never encountered this problem I could print for month with just black. Epson , never again. And the cartridges are astronomical!
Summer 2010. Will not walk by an epson. Ever.
Epson why !!!!!!!
Yea I have the same problem and I just want to say FU*K YOU EPSON
We have Canon iP4200 printer and same problem! Makes me wish that I still had my old Canon BJ-200, black only printer. Does anyone still make a simple black only printer?
No more Epson printers for me. This is bad business. See ya later Epson. HP does the same thing, only worse -- they have DATE expirations on their print cartriges. After that date the cartridges don't work--even if they still have ink in therm. What a pack of losers.
Me too... this sucks ***!
Mofuckin stupid solution this!
I can't belive it, this sucks so bad.
I have an epson workforce 600 and the printing has gaps in it. i have replaced all the ink did several nozzle checks and head cleaning i also have tried a can of air to clean out any dust and right now it's only showing the magenta and some yellow in the nozzle check
SOURCE: Scan when ink cartridge is empty?
Hi-
Chances are you can scan from the computer but if you are going to copy using it as standalone it will not scan- try running epson scan from computer.

My forte is text printing......not interested in color, but no printer is marketed as black text printing only. I will accept removing the color cartridges and just using the black one in my Canon mp510 3 in 1, if it is at all possible. Come on, you fix it wizards!!!
Yupatsame
same problem
Mine the same
I never print in colour but when just one colour cartridge registered empty I had to replace it so I could carry on printing in Black only. A short time after, the same thing happened with all the other colour cartridges. I replaced them all and used Black only printing. After I used only two more Black cartridges all the colour cartridges showed empty so its asking me to buy and replace them again. This is ridicules and to costly to keep having to keep changing colour cartridges when your not even printing in colour. I have had to buy more colour cartridges than the black ones I use. Sorry EPSON you have got something wrong with your printers. My daughter has a very cheap printer and this does not happen to hers. Its about time we where able to buy a black print only print. I'm taking my Epsom to the local tip.
Same here. It sucks. All I want is a simple document...not pictures. Even though my black ink is full and one color is out, it won't print.
canon i950 runs out of 1 colour ink then i have to replace it before i can print anything again, iI ONLY WANT TO PRINT BLACK. wont print even if black aqnd white printing only is selected. please help someone.
same exact problem... i'll never invest in an epson printer again.
I'm trying to replace my ink cartridges but I get an error message saying the scanner is open.
