My digital Sony DSC-P10 fell down while taking pictures and lens has got stuck in half way.. Lens doesn't go in when I switch off and when i switch on then it can open well and gives error on the screen. ..... can any body help on this
Hello, Im "Darntoothysam" and heres how to fix it for FREE, but ONLY if your lens is stuck at an angle. Heres a trick for you, you might be able to fix it yourself. With the lens pointing perpendicular to the ground, place the edge of the lens on the edge of a table or counter. NOT the flat round front section of the lens, the curved edge or side only. Position the lens on the table and press on it so that you are pushing the lens back towards the center to straighten it out. You may need to press slightly hard, don't worry, its already damaged so youre not going to hurt it if you don't push with all your might! Keep pressing on the lens, if it doesn't pop back in push slightly harder. This will either work, or it wont, like I said, just don't put all your weight on it. If it pops back in place, it will probably work just fine again!
When it ives the error message to restart the camera ,press the on/off button simultaneously rotating the lens a little harder .The lens comes out a bit .Try doing this till comes out fully.

I have a problem like that, my sony digital camara is no more showing images when on to take pictures. before I will see the image through the screan then shoot but I don't know now what happen when I turn on is on, but shows the screen black and white and if I shoot the view is green please help I want to know what may be the problem

I just went a few steps further and it fixed the lens assembly completely! I took the cam apart and took out the lens assembly, and removed all screws from the back of the assembly, then I could push the lens back together easily, without gear problems... then I put her back together and success!!! sony DSC-W55.
Oh I would like to add....most shops aren't going to spend all day trying to fix a jammed lens because they are usually not worth their time...they would rather Sell you a new lens block assembly with to me Total losses the camera. Not worth the expense unless your camera has sentimental value.
There is a guy on e-bay that does fast cheap work on sony digital cameras, his name is "Darntoothysam" search google or search his user ID on e-bay and contact him. I would say you have a damaged lens mechanism that needs fixed or replaced. Hes cheap you should ask what the charge would be to repair it. Its common so dont sweat it. They are made from very brittle plastic and so tiny not much will cause them to break. Its almost unavoidable being so small with a zoom mechanism.
I had the same problem. The first time I could bring it back in under warranty and they've replaced the entire lens. The second time I didn't feel like being charged to replace it again nor to buy a new camera and figured I couldn't ruin it much more.
The only way, I can see, is to dismantle the camera lens and put it back together. For me this solved the issue, with just one screwdriver.
Disadvantage is that the lense is really the last component you can take out after some unscrewing and unclicking;
If it's just the covering panel on the front, twist a bit on the outer cylinder of the lense. It should come off, pop off the covering on the front (don't break anything) and puzzle the covers back in place. (you should see two metal pieces inside which are connected to a spring, the plasic cover with the longest base-pin should be between them. The other one, with a sharp point can be used to pull the spring apart to place the other piece.)
If it's really stuck, this fixed it for me (screwing and unscrewing not mentioned things fit well so you wont need to "force" anything. Oh and be careful with the long battery-looking metallic thing. It will shock you if you touch the contacts!):
*Start with the back-panel, then you'll be able to remove the front-panel
*Take off the sides
*Get the LCD out (you can pull out the copper wires from the board and put it aside)
* Detach the CMOS sensor from the lense
* Take the base with the lense out of the casing (takes some fiddling, don't force it)
* Unscrew the motor part (it's a small "box" on the side of the lense.) and try to rub against the long black gear attached to the lense. If the lense jumps out, it might be the motors' gears which are stuck.
At this stage, I could see the insides of the lense schift around which was what falling had done for me it seemed.
* open the back of the lense, fix the backpanel back on the two springs (sitting on little prongs)
After putting it all back together, my camera was fixed.

bought a Sony DSC W290 camera in November and today the camera slipped
from my hand and dropped almost 5 ft to my tiled floor. There was a

lens retracted, but the shutter didn't close at all. I fiddled the
shutter closed, but when I restarted the camera, the lens was almost
completely stuck, the display was extremely blurred, and I got the

screwdriver.
I even opened the camera - only to find that the front
could not come off and I'd have to disassemble the entire camera just to
get to the lens.

read the suggestions here, but tapping with a pencil, and manipulating
the lens w/ a screwdriver didn't work, so I kept searching and found

The lens on my Hp R717 Camera got stuck so when I turned it on, it would shut off automatically. The shutters were stuck too so I extended the lens using a flat screwdriver and then shut it, and kept doing that until the lens finally shut.
As you turn it on give it a sharp tap against a table so the lens continues and emerges from the body
The lens zoom mechanism is very delicate on most of these cameras, and its probably busted. What error exactly are you getting?
Yea, it's the lens mechanism busted. The message is meant to help you reset the lens protection function that shuts down the camera when the lens is obstructed. But when the lens stays obstructed- as is probably your case since the little cogs are either broken or out of alignment, or sometimes also when the protection is trigered and doesn't revert, the message won't go away.
It's a very delicate repair, takes opening up the camera, and unless you are familiar with such things it will need a lab, which usualy won't be cheap.
Sorry... If you're getting another camera buy a case for it, and keep it tied to your wrist when out.

My lens is stuck and i tryed doin what toothy aid and it wont work. it just turns on and says lens error and doesnt let me do anything. i have a nikon 5.0
I dropped my camera on ice and my lens was completely stuck outward. When I turned the power on the message simpley said turn power on/off again. But my lens would not move. My camera stayed this way for a couple of days. I was considering taking it for repairing but I was in China and could not communicate with the store owner. So I decided to google direction for fixing a stuck camera lens. I have to say the advice toothy gave was so helpful I did just that and I heard the "pop" I was kind of nervous... but as toothy mentioned just apply pressure not your whole entire body weight. My camera lens closed! Thank GOD and thanks toothy...I hope this helps the next person.

What I do is take the camera apart, take the lens apart, clean the gear drive / transmission etc. (1 grain of sand can cause your lens to hang up and sometimes strip the internal gears on the Zoom motor etc.) Use a sharpie to mark the lens so you can put it back together in the proper slots. Once you remove the gear assembly you can move the lens in and out freely with your hand. Once you can do that, put the gear motor back on and Presto! Put everything back together and it should work. If you are not mechanically inclined don't bother with it....just buy a busted screen camera off ebay and swap the lenses......Golden inf0!
Hey i have the cam Sony DSCW5 and had the same problem and it said "Turn off and then on the cam" or something of that sort. After reading some of the tips on web what i did was just i switched on the cam and blown air with my mouth with full pressure into the gaps between the lenses. I then gave a gentle whack to my camera on all the sides. I later switched off and then on my camera. It worked as usual and i can now take my pics. Then i just cleaned the gaps b/w the lens again with a vacuum cleaner in its "Low pressure" mode. Its works awesome. What i warn is don't hit the camera too hard and don't blow the air on to the lens !!!
Lens is probably just stuck, because of debris or misaligned gears. Thelens can many times be repaired without having to replace it. Try to return to manufacturer. If you're out of warranty, there arethird party place that fix them such as camera lens repair. There are also free camera repair guide website that show you how to replace the lens, the part is usually available on ebay.
Well when that happened to my camera. My uncle simply pushed it from the side that was more out.
Hi, I had the same problem.. Shutter wouldn`t open and lens wouldn`t come out... ran a thin piece of paper around the lens, there was a bit of dirt there.. The paper came out a little black. This solved my problem.

if ur very sure that the battery is fully charged...
first we would advice you to change the batteries and see ...... if
that doesnt work... the battery contacts may be corroded or bent and
hence not making correct contact with the battery
....
sometimes there cud be dust or sand particles in the lens retraction
passage... blow out air in those places..... this cud help a great
deal.... I was able to fix a similar problem by wiggling the outermost
part of the lens.as its trying to go in....
also try Place the
camera flat on its back on a table, pointed at the ceiling. Press and
hold the shutter button down, and at the same time press the power-on
button. The idea is that the camera will try to autofocus while the
lens is extending, hopefully seating the lens barrel guide pins in
their slots.
if that doest help
Remove the batteries, then
remove the memory card. Then install the new batteries, when you turn
it on it should come back to life. turn it off, slip in the memory card
and turn it on one last time.
if that doesnt help
Insert
the cameras Audio/Video (AV) cable, and turn the camera on. Inserting
this cable ensures that the camera's LCD screen remains off during the
start process. Thus extra battery power is available to the camera's
lens motor during startup. This extra power can be useful in overcoming
grit or sand particals that may be jamming the lens. If the AV cable
doesn't fix the lens error by itself, consider keeping this cable
installed while trying the above fixes and 7 as a means to provide
extra help to these fixes. But note that I DON'T recommend keeping the
cable installed during Fix 6 as you may damage the AV port while
tapping the camera. Reinsert the cable only AFTER tapping the camera.
Now
we're entering into the realm of potentially damaging your camera in
conducting the fix. There is definitely some risk here, so take care
when conducting the following two fixes.
Fix #6:
Repeatedly tap the padded/rubber usb cover on a hard surface with the
intent of dislodging any particles that may be jamming the lens. Other
variations include hitting a side of the camera against the palm of
your hand. A lot of people have reported success with this method.
HOWEVER, there is also some potential for damaging or dislodging
internal components with this method, such as unseating ribbon cables,
or cracking LCD screens.
Fix #7: Try forcing the lens.
More people have reported success with this method than with any of the
other methods. HOWEVER, there's obviously some potential for damaging
your camera by using this method. Variations include gently pulling,
rotating, and/or twisting the lens barrel while hitting the power
button. Attempt to gently straighten or align the barrel if it's
crooked or twisted. Another variation includes looking for uneven gaps
around the lens barrel, and then pushing on the side of the lens barrel
that has the largest gap (note pushing the lens barrel all the way in
is NOT recommended as it may become stuck there). While doing any of
the above, listen for a click that indicates that the lens barrel guide
pins may have reseated in their guide slots. If you hear this click,
immediately stop and try the camera.

The gearing on the lens is probably damages from the drop. You have two choices:
1. Send it in for a repair (which will be expensive) and claim from your insurance. If it is uneconomical to repair, your insurer will probably pay for a replacement camera.
2. If you're not insured, it may be cheaper to just buy a new camera rather than pay for a repair to a 4(?) year old camera.

The error that it gives is "turn off the power and turn it on again". Problem occurs when I turn on the camera .. it tries to take out the lens and as the lens is stuck it can't do that and gives this error. When I switch on camera in "view picture" mode. Then it does switch on (as it does need to open the lens) and I can even see and download pictures in the camera LCD.

i did just what toothy said and it works again! whoo hoo! thank you thank you! i clicked it back with it turned off and the batteries out. i clicked the bigger part of the zoom first with gentle pressure from just my fingers, then the inner zoom gently as toothy described.
my lense got stuck but when i turn the power on it shuts off like three seconds later so it won't turn on or off and the lense is stuck. i tried switching the batteries but it dosen't work. i have no idea what to do. help!
similar problem. Sony DSC-W7. Possible software problem in the camera, according to posts on other websites. The internal instructions in the camera have to be reset. Other manufacturers have the same issue. I once sent my camera in for repair with this same problem and it was shortly returned to me. It has happened again and out of warranty. Sony has fixed $180 repair charge, more than I paid for the camera which is not beyond warranty. I'm looking for the instructions on how to reset the internal software, but no luck yet.

I had this issue as well, but found the lens assembly got a bit out of alignment to one side. It took me some looking to see it. I pushed the assembly slightly to one side and it popped back into place and has been working great since.
