Tv still dim after adjusting

When I turned my tv on after an electrical storm the picture was very dark, I went to the menu and adjusted the brightness, the picture was dim and out of focus.

Sounds like you may have gotten a pwer surge and blew out the regulator in the set. If you know how to trouble shoot regulator curcuitds then it could be as simple as the str type regulator. If you dont then open the set and see what module the set has it would start with a 9-something as it should be inside the back cover and then contact http://www.tristatemodule.com and see what they charge to repair the entire pcb or the exchange of the module. As Zenith sets are made to be repaired in house by quilifyed repair stations IN hOUSE. Good luck to ya.

How to adjust brightness
You don't say anything about the brand, but most have a menu or setup button on the remote (and TV) which give an on-screen display of functions available. You should see one for picture adjustments. Perhaps the projection bulb is getting old and dim. This is another possibility.

There should be a setting in the menu of the TV to turn off the auto dim feature (used for adjusting the brightness of the picture depending on ambient room lighting) I don't have a Sony LCD here with me to walk you through the menu settings, but I am certain it is there somewhere. The Contrast and Brightness on tv appears to be dark.
If this is a CRT-based TV and it's been played most of the time, you may have a bad picture tube, especially if strong red colors bleed to the right. CRT's dim with use, unlike LCD or plasma. But it could also be trouble in the video circuits - none of this falls into the DIY category, unfortunately. High voltage involved, unless you're comfortable around it and want to try turning up the screen controls inside the TV. If you do, let me know - but "no response at all" from the external adjustments points to a more serious problem.
