purpose as well.
Function keys are located at the top of Compaq Presario
keyboards.
By learning how function keys work on a Compaq Presario you
can take advantage of time saving keyboard shortcuts.Purpose
Use function keys to access menus, save changes and create
shortcut keys.
Various applications, including Microsoft Office, allow you
to select a function key as a shortcut key for running specific tasks. These
settings are usually found under the Tools, Settings or File menu.
Each Compaq Presario computer has twelve function keys.
The most common used keys are "F2,"
"F8," "F10" and "F12."
The first three are used mainly to access and use the Compaq
BIOS. "F12" is used to access a set of run from options during the
boot process.
How to Access

of the keys on the top row of the keyboard. Access the key's dual purpose by

There's a display "toggle" sequence on your computer to send the signal to your external post (VGA?). Look at the Function keys (top row) for a screen icon. Hold Fn key down and press that Function key (on Dell, usually F8). You should get an indication on your screen of which outputs are active -- look for BOTH.
HI there,
The function keys (F1 through F12) are exactly that. Function Keys.
F1 generally opens a Help dialogue
F8 opens your windows startup manager when booting windows
F10/F11/F12 Can be used in some BIOS managers
These keys are dependant on what operating system you are using which will define what they do. Some OS's allow you to program these keys to open different things.
You must enter the "BIOS" at start up (sometimes called SetUp). Press F2 or F8 or F11 or other function key that will be required by your computer. Should tell you at boot.
Enter the BIOS settings, find the boot sequence and edit it. remember to save your changes.

If you are referring to the "touch pad" on Laptop/notebook, if the touchpad on your laptop is not working and is unresponsive, it's not broken, you or someone else has accidently deactivated it with the function key.
Then you can try this,
Most laptops (if not all) come with a function key. The function key is labelled "Fn" and usually stands out from the rest - either the "Fn" is in a different color or the key as a whole. The function key works in conjunction with other keys on the keyboard especially the ones in the top row marked "F1" to "F12". The combination of function key with these keys lets you perform various tasks quickly such as shutting the screen, putting the computer in sleep mode, switching the wireless connection on and off etc.
By keeping the function key pressed and then hitting one of the keys ("F1" to "F12"), activates a task. You can activate and deactivate the touchpad by using the function key with the "F8" key.
I know nothing about this machine in particular but immediately when the computer beeps...
Generally the "delete" key gets you into the bios menu. If not that, then its almost always a function key "F1"-"F12" Just try running your finger down and back the function row as it boots if "DEL" fails
Windows' boot menu comes up when you hit "f8" repeatedly before the windows logo appears. For older Windows versions use the left shift key and hold it just before and during the windows logo.
Give it a try!
