Canon powershot a610..pictures come out black..

Only had my camera for one month (birthday gift). Just one day stopped taking pictures...all pictures come out black like the shutter is closed but shutter on lens is open. LCD monitor works because I can see the menu on the screen. I did not drop or mishandle the camera. It's still under warranty but I just want to be sure I've done all that I could to try to fix the problem before sending back for repairs.

    The same problem has happened to me, I have not mishandled it whatsoever.

    I am having the same problem all of a sudden. Didn't drop the camera or anything and it was fine 2 days ago and now all of a sudden it is like the shutter is closed but it isn't, the camera thinks it is taking a pic but it is all black.

    i have been using the camera since 2 years but sudenly it stopped working. The pictures come out black

I HATE AC BUSES

i live in india and it is very very humid here in summers. we were on tour. entered an AC bus for the tour. opened my POWERSHOT A610 after say 5 hrs. in this time we made multiple entry and exits with the cam from the bus. when it came to opening my cam it showed the same problem u are describing. everything is OK but shooting just blank pics. i was out of warranty and repaired it at a local camera workshop who are in the prof of repairing for decades. they told that the multiple entry and exit from the bus caused the moisture to condense and form a glue with the dirt and dust deposited around the ccd cover. as they told the sensor is covered mechanically. it opens only when u are about to shoot... the button half-pressed. they opened it up under suitable conditions, unclogged it and since then it's an OK cam now.

I HATE AC BUSES NOW!!!!

it cost me 1400 bucks in Indian rupees. that would be about 30 $ if the rate is rs 47/$. but here it is very costly when u have the income as about 300 $ on average per month!!!

"Too dark" or do you really mean "totally black"? I'm asking because a stuck shutter is a very common failure mode for your particular model camera.
The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, sometimes with lines, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open). To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

Camera has a black LED screen when in the shooting mode. If a picture is taken it also is black. Previous pictures can still be viewed from the memory stix.
probably ur sensor is dead or there is dirt and moisture accumulation over ur sensor.... it is a mechanical cover and the dirt-moisture ghlue is preventing it from opening and stimulating the sensor. take it to prf repairer and get the dirt removed.

i had the same problem with my POWERSHOT A610

Black screen while shooting, but still taking pictures not black
Nonononooooo fotomohamed, he can review just taken pictures on the LCD. The screen is working.

Actually, it sounds like you just accidentally pressed the DISPLAY button on the back of your camera. This manually turns the screen on and off in picture taking mode to save batteries (you would then use optical viewfinder). Just press it once and it should turn back on.

Canon Powershot A610 won't power-up
My camera stopped working some time later after being dropped.
If you are brave (or desperate), try this... I found it was not too difficult to open the camera up. Take all the screws from the bottom, sides and under the card and usb, and inside the battery compartment. They are all different lengths so keep some record of what goes where. Then I made sure the multiway connector underneath the top was firmly in place. That was all I could see that I could fix myself. And what luck! when I put it back together it worked.

LCD black in shooting mode only
Defective CCD. Just happened with our A610 as well. Oddly enough just had our Canon ZR85 camcorder repaired about 1 month ago (for free) due to this same problem. Sounds like Canon isn't as forthcoming with the A610 tho. We called today and they said $100+ to repair or replace, but the following link seem to indicate that if you're persistent you can get them to fix for free. Now the battle begins ...
