I have borrowed an Ebac z650e from a neighbour and forgot to switch it off at the plug before removing the water container. I switched it off before replacing the empty container and now there is a red light on and the fan is making a noise but before this happened it said "auto" on the display panel and now it doesn't. I am worried I have damaged it. Is there something I should press that resets it?

Independent of the bucket switch, the control panel should light when the unit is plugged into a powered receptacle and the on/off switch is depressed. The problem is likely the 12 amp. fuse located inside of the unit.

The fall may have knocked out some wiring -- open the unit (remove back panel, then remove front by taking out screws inside) and see if any of the cables to the front panel or control board came out.

Take it to a metal scrap yard and turn it in the copper and buy a new one. Buy a different brand.
