"Memory Card Error,""Card Locked"

I just won this camera on eBay. It was listed as a working camera, but after I purchased it I find out (in the finer detail) that the camera has a message in the window that says; "memory card error" and "card locked." Have I been (forgive my term) screwed?
I haven't actually got the camera yet; should be a couple of days. I thought I should do as much research as I could.
Do you have any suggestions, or should I dispute this sale?
I appreciate any help,
HIGHLY INEXPERIENCED

Thanks very much for your help. As I said, it should be a couple of days before I get this camera. When I do, I will let you know how this solution worked. It sounds good to me; and once again, thanks a lot for your help.

I got the camera, and did what was recommended. I very much appreciate your help; unfortunately, as beautiful as this camera is, I believe it's TOAST! It will cost more to fix than I paid for it; about $160.00 to repair. I paid $130.00. I have contacted the dude, and explained the problem. I haven't heard back yet, but, hopefully I won't have to file a dispute.
    THANKS AGAIN,
    stanlick,

Don't Panic there should be no trouble with this sale, The Canon Powershot takes SD memory cards which stands for Secure Digital, Secure in the fact that the memory cards have a tiny switch on the side of them that can be locked so that there cannot be anythong written or deleted from the card.
This is probably what has happened to this camera, nothing to do with the actual camera but with the SD memory Card.  To fix it just switch the tiny switch on the side of the Sd memory card to the unlock position and everything should work fine!!
Cheers
Emmanuel
P.S Can you post the link to the ebay auction as this would be very helpful.

Just installed a new memory card in my powershot A430 and the camera says memory card error, card is locked. how do I unlock?

What type and size memory card? The A430 works with SD cards. It won't work with SDHC cards.

SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

Memory card locked

There are several possible causes for "memory card locked", "memory card error", or "no memory card". The most common cause is having the tiny slide switch on the side of the card in the wrong position. The second most common is trying to use a 4GB or higher SDHC card with an older camera made before SDHC format came out. There are also other common causes if the above didn't help, with troubleshooting steps for this problem listed here.

My camera says it is a memory card error, the card is good and I even tried a new one. Is there a fix?

Your camera model can only use 2GB or less standard SD cards. Fortunately, 2GB standard SD cards are relatively inexpensive these days, and may be purchased on Amazon or eBay. There are several possible causes for "memory card locked", "memory card error", or "no memory card". The most common is trying to use a 4GB or higher SDHC card with an older camera made before SDHC format came out. Other causes include problems with the tiny slide switch on the side of the card, or the electrical contact switch internal to the camera. The problem may also arise from simple formatting problems if the card has never been formatted in the camera (note that this will also erase the card). Troubleshooting tips for this problem may be found at this link.
