I have a PM0401850 Coleman generator with a broken fuel cap, and the part appears to be discontinued, out of stock, and notorious for breaking. Has anyone come up with an alternative cap for this line of generators? This same cap is also used on: PC0401855 Coleman Powermate Generator PE0402041.01 Coleman Powermate Generator PM0401850 Coleman Powermate Generator PM0401851 Coleman Powermate Generator PM0401852 Coleman Powermate Generator PM0401854 Coleman Powermate Generator PM0401855 Coleman Powermate Generator PC0401850 Coleman Powermate Generator PC0401851 Coleman Powermate Generator

SOURCE: generac generator on auto runs

Hi and welcome to FixYa I am Kelly. Your red LED is telling you that it was 1. overloaded. 2. has low voltage 3. overheated or 4. short in the powered circuit.

OVERLOAD LED (red): Lights up if the generator experiences
a load greater than the rated output, low voltage, overheats or
the powered circuit experiences a short. The output is stopped
even though the engine keeps running.

I do not know which of the 4 conditions caused your red light. If you have the read light with no load I would suspect low voltage from the generator / inverter. If it overheated you will also get the Red LED with no load.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.

SOURCE: rotor won't turn due to

You do not say what type/model generator you have, so I will just give you some basics.

There is nothing wrong with the magnets. Their power did not change at all, their pwer never changes, except to degrade slightly over time (hundreds of years.)

The generator rotor is hitting the stator. In other words, the alignment of the rotor inside the generator is off center, making the rotor bind on the inside of the stator, resulting in a lock-up.

With the generator attached to the motor, remove the generator end, and slowly try to turn the engine over by hand. REMOVE THE PLUG WIRE FROM THE PLUG FIRST, so that the engine cannot start. Watch inside the generator, and discover why the generator rotor is not aligned. Pehaps the bearings were installed incorrectly, or the housing is installed incorrectly. Most generator engines have a tapered power-takeoff shaft, where the gen. shaft connects to it. Is this Bolt tightened to specifications? Is there some debris floating around in the gen. (such as a screw, or a pebble, or a nut) that would impede its movement?

good luck

SOURCE: I need to trobleshoot the

First, check to ensure that the pilot generator is fully bathed in the pilot flame. If it is not, that must be corrected first. Once the generator is fully bathed, it should put out at least 500 millivolts. New generators will easily exceed this level, but you want to see at least 500 mV. I have personally seen heaters continue to work properly with mV outputs as low as 400 mV, but spec calls for at least 500. If you are not getting 500 mV minimum, replace the pilot generator.
Testing the gas valve itself involves jumpering the valve such that the 500 mV from the pilot generator goes straight to the valve coil, bypassing all the components such as thermostat, high limits, pressure switch, etc. I generally recommend that homeowners avoid playing with the valve if they are not trained to work on gas appliances. It is one thing for a homeowner to do the simple repairs, like changing a pilot generator (which is a piece of cake for someone with even moderate skills). It is a completely different matter to play around with the valve if you don't really know what you are doing.
As a final point, unless the heater has some age to it, most millivolt gas heaters will have more issues in the components than in the valve or pilot generator. Even the pilot orifice is more likely to be a problem. I'm not saying that you don't have an issue with the valve or generator. I'm just saying they are less likely to be the problem and are always the last items I check on these heaters.

Is there a gas filter on coleman 5000? runs until hot then shuts off

There is somewhat of a filter inside the tank, however your issue could be air lock or faulty oil sensor. Try running the generator with gas cap loose to allow more air into the tank. If cap is fault try to clean cap vent ports with carb cleaner or just replace the cap. If not fuel lock, remove wire from oil sensor and test again.

What type of oil do I use 1850 pm0401850

Oil Type. Use new good quality oil such as SC, SD, and

at which the engine is operated:
Summer: (temperatures of over 40 degrees F/10 degrees
C) SAE 30 or SAE 10W-30, SAE 10W-40
Winter: (temperatures of below 40 degrees F/10 degrees

I have a Coleman generator 1850 pulse and it runs ok for a little

Gravity feed fuel systems are the most simple and reliable way to deliver fuel to the engine, however suffer from a couple of problems.. As the engine heats up fuel tends to be pushed out of the carb back into the fuel tank and if the vent in the gas cap is not working properly fuel lock (or a slight vacuum in the tank) will prevent fuel from entering the carb. There should be a plastic block or manafold seperating the carb from the engine to keep the carb from overheating. Some engines have this block bolted to the engine, then the carb bolted to block., others have two bolts thru the carb and block to engine. In ether case make sure parts are held tightly together so no vacuum leaks thru gaskets.. One should make sure that the gas cap is venting. Sometimes fuel sloshing in the tank will clog the vent-hole in the cap. Try running the generator with the cap loose to see if this helps.. Replace fuel cap as needed if vent is clogged. Good luck with your generator.

Colman Powermate Generator will not stay running

This overflow can be caused by:

1. The float sticking

2. Gas inside of the float air chambers

3. The needle and seat have debris in them or a r damaged.

It is not a difficult fix but it does mandate removal of the carburetor float bowl.

You could probably do this yourself. It is much easier if you place the generator on a high work area so you can see the float and needle once you have the float bowl removed. Just make sure you do not drop the float assy so far that the needle comes out of the seat unless you have to remove the hinge pin SCREW for the float to clear the debris near the needles' pointed rubber head.

Thanks for using FixYa

To many output volts

Probably running too fast. You can slow it down by adjusting a screw behind or near the carburetor. Monitor the voltage while doing this. The adjustment screw will be one which moves a lever with a spring attached to it.

Check the vent in the fuel cap to make sure its free to breath. It could be creating a vaccume in there and starveing for fuel. Maybe run it with the gas cap off and see if the problem gos away.
